SH III on a mac

Is anyone running this game on a Mac with the new Crossover Mac software?? I am seriously thinking of making the jump to Mac but want to be able to play my favorite game.....Will all the great mods that have been shared still work if using this software??? I couldnt think of playing this game without GWX now.......guess I have been spoiled......plus all the great mods...just wouldnt be the same.....Rick

I am sure it could be done, but you would have to install Windows XP on your Mac, I know there is software to allow you to do this.. May be worth a try..

I am running SH3 on my brother's 30-month old iMac. We partitioned the hard drive using Boot Camp (included with the Mac), and installed Windows XP SP3 in the 2nd partition. I have had zero problems. No CTDs; no problem saving when near land or near other ships. (Knock on wood.) All the graphics work fine, but I have not installed any of the special graphics mods yet.

Like you I have resisted switching to Mac because of games that only run under Windows. Now that I have had this experience, I think I've bought my last Wintel. The Mac and its OSX operating system are everything I had hoped they would be.

I had hoped I would hear something like this....I too have been a long time PC'r...but I think the time has come to make the switch....just been a little apprehensive I guess...thanx for the feedback...I will let you know how it goes.....Rick

I was just past the apex of my SH3 addiction when my PC began to act up. My wife had been begging me (read: bugging me) for a Mac for some time. I bought a 24" imac last year, dual 3.06 with the Geforce 8800 and 4 gigs of ram.

The first thing I did after I brought it home was buy a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium, run Bootcamp and install Silent hunter 4. Totally happy. I only use Windows for gaming, but Mac is such a better environment anyways that the reboot between sessions doesn't bother me.

If you're thinking about making the switch to Mac then you should just do it. You will not regret it. And there is no real downside, except for cost. But hey, you're paying for quality. That's how I justified it. And the performance is phenomenal in either environment.

I haven't used a Mac yet. Can they be upgraded like a PC? I like to play games, and I try to make my PC last 5 to 6 years by getting a new graphics card every two years. Do Macs use the same GPU's ie. ATI, Nividea, as a PC? Or is it all proprietary?

I've been playing all day today on my MacBook Pro. GWX works great under Boot Camp (Tiger) once I upgraded my video driver. I was even able to get it working under VMWare, but the mouse was buggy and the video looked poor because of the VMWare video driver. I'm going to mess with it some more because I sure would love to be able to play under OSX without rebooting.

Hi guys...well I took the plunge and bought an Imac....I have installed the program Parallels which allows you to load windows and run it without partitioning the hard drive....I have used it to access Quicken with success....I installed SHIII and patched it....and then installed GWX III.....modded it slightly...and then tried to launch....it gets me to the menu....I then load a new career....and then when I try and start the game...it goes thru the loading process...which is extremely quick I might add....and then dumps me to the desktop......

Is anyone else using this program to run SHIII and if so.....any suggestions?? Thanx....Rick

We all want the reliability of MAC and the freedom of Windows. In a perfect world we would have that. Atleast we can dream of it.

It's funny that people claim Macs are more reliable. I have to take my 24" imac in this week because the HD is about to fail (google "flashing question mark of death"). Macs are PCs. Same parts, same power supplies, same processors, same vulnerability to technical failure. The GUI is most definitely more well engineered than Windows but I've had my share of software crashes and system hangs on OSX.

I'm really glad I bought my imac, but the whole "Mac phenomenon" is bordering on cultish. Seriously, it's just a computer. Like Barak Obama, your iMac or Macbook is not the messiah. It's just a tool designed to do a job. Hell, I'm sure half of Apple's worshipers don't even own a Mac.

The "secret" of Mac stability and reliability is a S.O built (and well built) to work together with a determined pieces of hardware. That avoids almost any compatibility problems.

I rather stay with the option of handpicking the hardware for my machines, tough. If you now what are you doing you can save a lot of money and still get a powerfull computer.

If you are considering switching to the mac, I can recommend the book

"Switching to the mac" by Pogue and Goldstein

This book explains the functions of the mac os using windows as a reference. It makes the switching much easier

Well after several attempts I got the game to run in the naval academy mode in the convoy training scenario....a few things I noticed that I did not like....1. the Apple mouse is not well suited for this game....I used a track ball mouse with my PC and liked it much better.....2, Although I have a 24" screen...I couldnt get it to play in full screen mode....3. I have a 3.06 GHZ processor and it was still kind of choppy at times....over 2GBs set for ram on the parallels virtual machine....dont really understand why it would be having issues.....Still havent been able to load a career....and have heard on another forum that Fusions is able to run SH III....which is also sold at the Apple store....I was going to purchase that software but the tech guy said Parallels was the better software......I guess he meant unless you want to play SH III...DOH!!!!...
