Default Tonnage Wars

I have received a few questions in regards to Tonnage Wars, so I made this little FAQ.

-=Tonnage Wars FAQ=-

What is Tonnage Wars?

Tonnage Wars is a community game play style, that pits your U-Boat captain against others in a friendly and fun manner to see who will be The Greatest U-Boat Ace of the Atlantic. No modifications are needed to play just a love for Silent Hunter 3 and a mature and honest game play style.

How do I play Tonnage Wars
Read Rules Here
Easy, just play !!

Actually it's not that easy, but very close. We ask that you create a account at the Tonnage Wars site (click my signature), by creating a account this will allow you to have your own personal forum to post and share your patrol logs, screenshots etc (If your a subsim user, simply use the same name as you use here). It will also allow you to attend our weekly game nights and have full access to our Ventrilo server for chatting online during gameplay. A scoring system is in the works for the near future so captains will have to increase realism or date in order to collect the biggest bounty. (more to come)

Hey wait, your trying to lure people away from subsim.com !?!

Not at all, Subsim supports many outside site, by doing this they expend the community and support of great game titles like SIlent Hunter 3.

I can post my patrol logs and screenshots on subsim, why use your site !?!

Yes you can, but unlike subsim, Tonnage Wars is not a general forum, it is a forum based on a gameplay style. Subsim is still your best source for all general questions on Silent Hunter 3 and other naval simulation games.

Tonnage Wars sounds stupid and I think your nuts !?!

Well Tonnage Wars may not be for everyone, it is our hope to attract a select few players that want a little more from Silent Hunter 3 and want to share there wins and losses with like minded people, and yes I am nuts, nuts for SH3 !!

If you have any questions please feel free to post them here on on the Tonnage Wars site.

Thanks for your support and both subsim and Tonnage Wars

First Game night is Friday April 10, 2009 8-10pm EST

how is tonnage wars a fair competetion if the mods you are using are not regulated.

what i mean is.. if one person is using stock... and another person is using an all cruise liner mod... obviously the latter will be the "tonnage king".

furthermore realism setting would be an issue as well

not an attack... just valid questions

might you consider categorizing?

for example

GWX2.0 tonnage wars (100% realism leader, 90% realism leader etc)

GWX3 tonnage wars

GWX 4 tonnage wars

NYGM Tonnage wars

stock tonnage wars etc

Great idea,

As it stands I am hoping to get people interested and join up to play, so I am making it as easy as possible, so I tossed the mods.

But your idea is great, if a few more people get involved then we can start to do just that ( hint, hint )

Thanks for the great advice !!

Hi Sharkely,

In terms of accounting for realism, can I make a suggestion? Weight the tonnage by the realism factor. For example:

Player 1 plays at 100% realism:
2500t x 1.0 = 2500t final tonnage

Player 2 plays at 84% realism:
2500t x 0.84 = 2100t final tonnage

Player 3 plays at 27% realism:
2500t x 0.27 = 675t final tonnage

etc. etc.

Of course this requires some honesty on the part of the player, but the idea is you are 'rewarded' for playing at higher realism, and 'penalised' for playing at lower realism. Higher realism is more risky than lower realism, but the rewards are better so it should make for interesting results.

Good Luck

Nav map on or off is a factor also as was mentioned in a recent thread. A lot of mods allow you to play with nav updates on and it still counts as 100% realism. Nav maps is a big bonus though, without it you can easily get into a situation where the convoy spots you before you spot them and your whole attack is delayed or foiled.

Its probably not feasible to reduce tonnage based on nav map on or off. Some newer players are not sure even what it is.

I was hoping there was a way for everyone to place on the same server in the same game but patrol different grids.

To be honest I just do not see the point of this exercise.

A forum where people post supposed sinkings and encounters with the enemy without any proof and everyone using different mods, different difficulty setting etc?

What the point of it all?

You could just sit and make the whole thing up.....absolutely pointless!

Listen, I thank you for your opinion, many players here are honest and enjoy this play style. Not only are you insulting the work that has been put into this, your insulting all the great SH3 players that use this forum and the TW forum.

Have a nice day

Shantyman you could be a bit more delicate, indeed...
You have no idea how much time it takes and the effort that has to be put
in order to do such thing. Even the making of the site takes a lot of time and hard work.
So please, if you're clueless about it stop being a smartass...

Thanks for the support, You know you try to be civil and respectful, even when your attacker is not. Look at the result.

17 posts in subsim and I am sure at least 5 are attacking me and Tonnage Wars for no good reason.

I have yet to see why people feel the need to post there opinions when they are clearly not asked for nor needed

But there always seems to be a few in every crowd.

I've heard critiques of a certain submarine simulation where no matter how much you sink your side still loses the war. Pointless.

I am not particularly competetive. Others posting on TW may have higher scores than me, but I really don't care. Others posting on TW maybe lying about their sinkings, but I really don't care. Others are probably playing with different mods and at different realism settings, but I really don't care. I treat the site on a honor system basis. I'm just using it to post my successes and my failures in a honest way and to enjoy reading other kaleuns' logs. Simple as that.

I'm sure Sharkley put a lot of work into this and I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

Wow, thanks for those kind words. I could not have said them better myself.

I do the same, I play honest and post honest..simple, anyone who talks about lying and cheating will probably be the one doing it.

I have updated a few things on the site to help keep a "template" of play styles, addons, and tonnage

Default First Game Night

Was a ton of fun !!

played the stock 1.4b verison of SH3 (multi install) and wow what a blast

Vent worked great, game loaded fast and was super stable.

I hope to see a few more out next game night, we will continue to play the stock 1.4b version, until further notice.

If interested in playing let me know all time are EST by the way and living in eastern Canada or USA would help ping rates.

Well I am sorry but thats where you are wrong!

This site is simply a cheap forum with an even cheaper template used. Anyone could setup total trash like this within about half an hour!

I give respect to the modders and developers who genuinely have to work hard.

Anyone could setup a forum and post logs on it! Big deal.

Anyhow I beleive in calling trash, trash!

It takes the technical skill of an ant to setup this kind of useless rubbish.
