Default Can't evade this destroyer!

Pertinent info
-------------
Date- May, 1940
Sub- Type XIIB
Location- South of Spain, West of the Straits of Gibraltar.

I was pursuing a couple of unguarded surface ships headed East towards the Straits of Gibraltar when all of a sudden I hear something whiz past my periscope. I turn the periscope, and I see that my dumb sonar man had let a destroyer get to within about 800m of my sub without noticing. Needless to say, I ordered a crash dive and made an emergency turn to avoid the depth charges he drops. I went down to 100m and dropped speed to 1kt. I checked my map and saw that this destroyer was the lead escort of a convoy I was heading directly toward, but for whatever reason, this destroyer was WAY ahead of all the other ships in the convoy.

Usually, at this point, I can just dodge the depth charges he drops and wait it out until he gives up. However, because I had been pursuing some surface ships for a good long while before it attacked, I am now low on battery and have a high CO2 level.

The first thing I tried was pointing my sub directly at/away from the destroyer while it pinged me. I had never done this before, but have read about it on this forum. On all my attempts, I was within 15 degrees of being pointed directly toward/away from the destroyer. However, it still somehow saw me. I kept trying this, and I was unable to shake the destroyer via this method. However, I think I ran it out of depth charges, as it no longer drops them.

The next thing I tried was to head directly away from the convoy. I did this, and I am now out of hydrophone range of it. However, this destroyer just won't give up. It keeps pinging me and driving right over me, but it isn't dropping any more depth charges!

My sub currently has minor damage from machine gun fire from when I went to periscope depth to see what was going on. My flak cannon and deck gun have minor damage, but that is it. Can someone give me any ideas?

Go deeper! At least 140 meters.

Well, I didn't want to try that, but I did, and it worked. Fired off a salvo of four torpedoes when it was turning, two hit, and now he's dead in the water. I wasted about two hours on that realtime, but no I know what to do later! Thanks!

Also, could anyone give me any tips on evasion? I thought I had escaped him before I tried attacking, but it seems my sonar man was saying "moving away" when he meant "closing." He kept saying "moving away," then all of a sudden he starts calling off bearings from the opposite direction and I hear the destroyer whiz over my head.

Either way, thanks.

you can try going deeper, but if a convoy is heading your way you may want to take the fight to him since you are low on batteries and air. Be aggressive since hes out of depth charges

He might have come around from behind you. Your sonarman is deaf directly behind you as your own engines cover up any noise you would hear.

Sorry, how did you get a type XII U boat? I thought they were never actually built. I wish they were, having a boat with 6 bow tubes, 2 stern tubes and a 105mm deck gun sounds fun.

Go to silent running, go deep and try to creep away. It seems to work for me. When they become available, get some decoys, as they can help you get away from a pesky escort or two

I make it standard to go down to 200m in emergency situations, run at slow, and if pinged drop speed further until you appear to have hit the 'sweet spot',you will know this as ASDIC pulses get weaker and also the propellors above will not sound as strong/nearby,also make sure you try and keep your stern facing the pursuer, the ASDIC is less effective bow/stern on,other than when on your broadside which is a larger surface for the ASDIC to hit.Having said all that being at 200m would surely give allied listening gear a hard time anyway.

Note: make sure your UBoat can make the extreme dive before hand by doing a dive test if you have sustained damage at all,you don't want to get close to 200m and realise the UBoat can only sustain 150m,for whatever reason.

Try looking for the 1000rpm problem.

I had the same issue over and over - silent running at engine setting '1' never worked, they still 'saw' me.

A change somewhere in a .cfg file modified the engine rpm's so they really would be under 1000rpm in silent running did the trick.

Sorry I can't be more specific - I'm only throwing this out there because some of the smarter people here may know what I'm on about.

Off topic:

With the XXI Boats Does staying below 100 rpms per engine matter ..or do you stay below 3 or 2 knots? I havent tried one of those in a while ...but it seemed I still needed to say below a certain speed (knots) to no be redected...vis an RPM....any word on this??
