Default When a thief stole his laptop, he was determined to get it back.

Man, I really hate to be a harsh critic but this guy is such a wimp (gasp!). I mean, come on, some bozo kicks in his door, and he compliments him in an article and blurs his face in the picture

Arrgh! WTH is wrong with people like this? Way to go, make brazen burglary a low risk enterprise, we all can enjoy having our homes invaded and our property stolen. And the police, seriously lame

PS: I know, the thief having possession does not prove he was the burglar Yeah, right. And when my car runs a red light camera, why do they send me the ticket, they can't prove I was the driver?

There's the problem dude....you need to be more like freaking Charles Bronson in DEATH WISH!

Or at least Uma Thurman in Kill Bill.

My best guess is that the victim didn't want to incur slander/defamation charges if the person the laptop was recovered from was in fact a buyer of stolen goods. Even if the guy was the burglar, the victim might be liable for invasion of privacy. I'm really not sure about that, though.

Ha! Traffic court doesn't work like that. You're guilty until proven innocent. Whether it is a police officer or a camera, you have less credibility than the court's sources. They count on the fact that it will be more expensive for you plead innocent and hire a lawyer than to just pay the ticket. Justice is one thing, generating revenue is quite another, as far as the agencies concerned care.

That, and the victim implied that he found the suspected burglar "adorable". Maybe they're dating now, and he didn't want to embarrass his man...
