Default sound edit question

i want to edit some sounds in SH4, namely the destroyer propeller/wakes. i can barely hear DD's when they are right on top of me so im looking for more a das boat effect (the part when they can hear the DD very loudly before it dumps on them).

would i be modding the sdl sound file or would i be better just increasing the actual volume of the DD's?

what sound software to people use to do such things? windows used to have a good sound recorder but the win7 one is pretty crap.

Turning up the volume on the .wav file should do it. Sorry about Win7's Sound Recorder. It should be able to increase volumes. If not, try www.goldwave.com. It comes with a free trial, and when that expires you just have to live with a reminder every time you use it. There are others out there that are truly free, but since I'm using one I bought for another purpose I'm not too familiar with them.
