Default EU - Telecoms Package = Internet Death

I don't know how many of you are aware of this EU Proposal but I must admit it crept up on me with no warning.

For voting on the 5th May 2006 in the EU Parliament the Telecoms Package, which is disguised as a 'Protect the Owner' amendment but it goes further than that.

If this bill is successful, it will see the ISPs receive the power to deny you access to certain sites & domains based on their opinion. At the heart of this is the battle against piracy & DRM violations however as usual the fix is draconian and totalitarian.

What can the Net User expect form their ISP?

Internet Packages - Not as you know them now. For example 24mb with 60GB cap but rather could be broken down to examples like this:

HD Stream Package - The user is granted additional bandwidth and connection rights to allow his/her access to the content requested.

Social Networking - The user is granted reduced bandwidth allowance in respect of less media streaming.

Gaming Package - The user is granted consistent & stable service in respect of their requirements.

ETC....The above packages would be specific for your requirements, meaning that a Gaming Package would not be granted access to HD Streaming services....while these are 'what ifs' at the moment it is clear that ISP's want more control over our net access more akin to the current mobile phone packages we pay for.

How would you Eu'ers feel if you received similar messages to those being dished out in China when you visit a site that is not 'deemed' suitable by your ISP?

Now, if this doesn't worry you as a private user, then what about business users? How do you think this will affect your net advertising? Will the people you sell to, target and trade with be granted the privilege to even view your product/site?

I hope Neal will grant me a small indulgence!

You stupid dumb **** mother****ing ******* do-gooding w*nkst*ins. Why don't you just remain silent at home doing your ****ing needlework and leave us to our freedom of access. Tw*ts!

Sorry if I over reacted, I hate this king of censorship.

Yeah, I may have been a little harsh about them but in my defense, my ISP is French. Stoopid, baguette bashers.

Maybe I can generate a little more interest in this thread if I say:

"This will end all free internet porn!"

Now, how does that grab you?

Honestly, 3 (or x) years down the line I may have to decide if I want online gaming access or Subsim access. What kind of choice is that?

Also, don't think the US is immune to this kind of mentality either. The largest telecoms provider involved in this debacle in Europe is AT&T Inc and I'm pretty sure that's a big infrastructure provider in the US too.

I find it strange that the usual members here at Subsim who vehemently defend their rights to digital (or otherwise) freedom are appalled at this proposal. Perhaps you think it won't pass the vote.

While this disturbs me, particularly because I did not know of this (in fact no one knows every single law which passes EU corridors), I believe that once more people hear about this, someone will go on knocking on the EUP doors. I've had it with them looking into which sites I visit, now they can almost officially with whom I am communicating and they wish to limit my surfing habits? Christ, I go from pure HTML to extreme flash and HD, there is no way I can define a my browsing habits.

Even though I support the EU, I have been getting pissed of by what it is doing. Some laws should be kept from polititians in general, not only the EU.

Makes me wonder how horribly "out of touch" these people are to even consider such a proposal.

Don't worry. That's "progress", and it's all for your well-being, comrade.

Oh yeah, the government will fix it. Look at how well all our other nationalized systems work.

Are they really so arrogant? Hopelessly optimistic? Stupid?

Fascists!

But you know, I wouldn't be surprised that if this did pass that most if not all of the EU countries would have riots or protests of some sort. People like their Internet... a lot... and I mean a lot a lot... not just a lot... it's like an extra notch up on the bar...

People tend to get violent with these things.
