Topic says it all. IJN doctrine embarked all aircraft below in the hanger spaces. Aircraft were only on deck to conduct flight ops.
The possible choices are: 1. no planes on deck (true for all bad weather conditions, night, and most of the time otherwise) 2. A few fighter planes forward. CAP launch in progress. 3. A massive strike on deck aft---jam packed planes ready to leave the deck in the next few minutes. This is in stark contrast to USN doctrine which embarked all planes on the flight deck (the hanger spaces were for mainenance and spare planes). For a US CV, the choices are: 1. Empty flight deck: all planes are aloft on strike and CAP duty. (least likely) 2. All (most of the entire air group) planes jammed forward as close as they pack: CV conducting landing ops. 3. All (most of the entire air group) planes jammed aft as close as they pack, allowign TO ops. (most likely since this includes night) |
