Default Victory or death??

Wondering If you get patrol assignements until the war is over or yor're dead. Don't know about sub commanders but pilots get assignements for a period of time or a number of missions, is not a win the war or get killed thing. I'm in my 4 patrol in only 3 months, at this pace I will need 60 patrols before the war ends ( this If I don't get killed somewhere ).
So my question is:

-I need to play the entire war or is possible to retire and come back at a later stage to follow your carrer?

Thanks

I've heard that it's possible to be offered a shore assignment, but I've not had one yet, and I'm on my 13th patrol. I know that, realistically, sub commanders were considered too important to lose after about 7 or so. So I suppose that you can always retire your skipper at your discretion and start afresh.

It will have to do until we have an "SH3 Commander" type program for SH4.

What will be cool is to being able to get a shore asignement for some months and then get back to the war.

i think the pilots are a special case because they were in a situation where a nick or small hit could kill you therefor life expectency was low in that reguard and the "quota" setup was something like twice the number of missions needed for an average pilot would likely get killed.

there is another way out for subs, you can get retired if you get your crew killed or get the sub damaged too much or too many unfinished missions.

I cannot see what the fun would be in having shore duty. The game is all about patrolling and hunting. I have completed the game afew times and the ending is pretty anti-climatic as are most games. Really there is not much to upgrade with as well in the game, so I have a Baleo with everything upgraded and lots of renown with nothing to spend it on. So, I just go out and am now into sneaking into ports and harbors and raising a little cain that way. Still the surprize of the hunt in this game far surpasses that of DW and SC which I finally un-installed and put on the shelf.
