Default Manual targeting with WO assistance

I have started a new career following the demise of my previous Kaleun and decided to crank up the realism a bit by using manual targeting with weapons officer assistance. I am still in August 1939 and have done a few dummy runs on merchants using the WO to identify the target and plot a solution for an attack. As I am new to this I am unsure how the TDC handles this. For example, if I spot a target closing at a range of 4,000 metres I lock the scope on it and ask the WO to identify it and plot a solution. Assuming my AOB is 90 degrees and the scope remains locked on to the target as it approaches and it does not change course, do I need to ask my WO to periodically update his solution or is the data automatically updated as the target approaches by the movement of the scope or UZO right up until I fire my torpedoes?

Also, if I wish to aim at a different part of the ship I am attacking, can I just unlock the scope aim and fire or do I need to get a new solution from my WO?

Your views appreciated.

WE Assistance is the same as auto-targetting, but only updated when you ask. The solution doesn't change until you ask again. I do it that way myself. You need to open the required tubes and ask for one last solution just before you fire, or you will definitely miss.

To answer this part of your question is a simple yes.

I do have one comment to add. Have you ever tried manual targeting without the WO? It's not to terrible difficult.

Good hunting.

Hi Nemo.
Here are two useful links.

1) http://www.3rdflotilla.org/videos/ma...ng_notepad.wmv

2) http://www.3rdflotilla.org/videos/ma...g_navchart.wmv

Open this link with IE (Mozilla won't open, at least not to me)

In beginning I was frustrated about manual aiming, but with little practice you will be able to shoot quite accurately without WO assistance.

I'm interested in the answer to this as well. I haven't tried it, but wouldn't you have to go into the F6 screen and muck around with the TDC dials to aim for a different part of the ship?

Oneshot/Onekill is right Captain Nemo, completely manual targeting isn't very hard, once you learn the basics.

What I normally do in that instance is as follows:
- open selected tube(s)
- lock scope to target then use WO to ID and plot solution
- If I want to aim at a different part of ship I do it immediately after solution from WO, then unlock scope and pick a new aim point (you'll see the 3 digit bearing indicator change) than I'll check the tick box on the notepad when the cross-hair is in the desired spot and fire straight away. Sometimes I keep the bearing the same as the locked position, but unlock it and let the target move across the scope for the same result

Give it a go and you'll see what I mean.

It's worth while mentioning that I only ever really fire at less than 1000m, preferably 500-600m using this method.

Thanks for the replies and advice on manual targeting. I'll see how I get on with WO assistance and then hopefully progress to doing it all myself.

Yes, just unlock and point. Only range needs to be updated if it changed much since the last WO advice. And only if the gyro angle is substantial. The rest is constant or accounted for automatically when turning the scope.
