What do we eat

What did the crews eat (allong with banannas and oranges) when on patrol. What were the rations like, 3 times a day or whenever off shift? Do you think the officers ate together and discuse, just curious

In the broadest sense:

They ate fresh fruit, bread and meat at the outset of a patrol then reverted to canned foodstuffs when the fresh fayre was used up.

Food aboard a U-boat was another interesting topic. At the beginning of a journey, as much food was cramped into every nook and cranny available in the U-boat. This resulted in one of the toilets being filled to capacity with food. They brought the best foods available with them, including fresh meat, sausages, bread loaves, fresh fruits and vegetables, but the small refrigerators meant that food spoilt quickly, especially in the damp environment of a U-boat. Very soon, fresh loaves of bread would sprout white fungi, which the crews promptly nicknamed as “Rabbits”, due to the white fuzzy appearance. By that time, food consisted mainly of canned goods supplemented by a soy based filler called Bratlingspulver. Issued by the military for U-boat crews, the crew unkindly referred to it as “diesel food”, due to the constant exposure of diesel exhaust that surrounded them.

also there was always the opportunity to scoop up what had fallen off the back of a freighter after it had been blasted by the deck gun, i saw a documentary on the history channel where a uboat crew collected various crates of Gin, tinned ham and corned beef, not a bad catch in the middle of an atlantic winter, certainly make life a bit more bearable at 100 meters with the gramaphone on, a few Gins and a tonne of corned beef sarnies.....pure bliss i bet!

Nah...It all tastes like diesel oil after a while anyways.

well i know they would slice the moldy bits off and eat the non moldy innards of sausages and bread. dont remeber where but do remember reading that

In "Iron Coffins" the author talks about furry rabbits (I think that is what he called them). They were loaves of bread with mould on the outside. They would do just what you wrote -- peel off the mould and eat the bread underneath.

My dad qual'd on the Angler back in the 60s and told me that you knew it was diesel boat coffee when it had a rainbow oil slick on the top. I suppose you could just add a splash of 3-in-1 oil to every cup with your cream and sugar. :rotfl:
