Of course... when you finish the "actual mission", contact with the command to receive a new mission (if it possible, of course).

In the messages tab of the log, you can send a status report and a contact report while being surfaced.

Contact Reports will only work when you have sighted a convoy and visual contact to at least 2 merchants (exception to this are convoys of guarded passenger liners, there you only need to see the liner). This will tell HQ about the convoy and is usually netted with an objective to destroy either escorts or merchants (if you have but a handful of torpedoes, you'll get order to Break contact and Return to Base[RtB]).

Status Reports can be made anytime on the surface and transmit your number of left torpedoes, numbers of ship sunk and tonnage total and your position. When you have completed your current (patrol, deploy, recon, delivery) objective, send a status report to get a new one.

You can only send either kind of report with a certain time delay (I believe it is around 3 hours ingame time). While sending the reports have to be done on the surface, receiving the answers from HQ can be done underwater.
Also note that sending reports increases the probability of hostile air patrols on your position.

Hope that helped

To say it another way, when you complete an objective get on the surface and open your radio message (M key with the mod I am using). Then click on send (left envelope if you are using UBM 1.5). You will immediately receive a new objective.

IF you have torpedoes / fuel remaining. In fact if you want to 'cheat' you can re-fit then phone home and have an endless patrol.

This is something I've wondered about. Since endless patrols are possible (and Midway is always closer than Pearl), what is a realistic limit for patrols? I've been limiting myself to refuelling on the way to the objective, but never intentionally rearming (although rearming occurs with refueling, and sometimes refueling after the objective is necessary in order to get home).

In other words, I limit myself to one full load of torps per patrol. After they are expended, I consider the boat to need maintenance and I go home.

Thats a pretty good outlook game wise. In real life it was more limited by the amount of food and other provisions aboard.

Many a time a boat would return with a full load of munitions, not a single kill let alone a sighting. But that wouldent be very much fun in a game.
