Default Why does the U-boat IX D2 look different in missions?

I was using TMO and I switched to RFB. I notice the U-boat in the mission is a cool old looking one with newer panels random slapped on and the one in missions is this perfect grey one.

Is that just how it works? The career one looks one way and the mission one the other? I like the old looking one.

That's the anti-sonar coating (Tarnmatte), which ironically was found to be more trouble than it was worth and never fitted to any operational Type IXs.
