Default Drilling begins

Quote:
Remember "drill, baby drill"? In its last weeks in office, the Bush administration is beginning to make it happen by quietly starting the process of exploration and drilling off the coast of Virginia. The state is ground zero for the drilling debate because of possible reserves off the coast and what energy experts see as a friendlier government than elsewhere

I'm suprised they jumped on this so quickly. Usually it takes months if not years of study and read tape just to talk about it let alone starting the drilling process.

I bet this good news for some of the watermen in Virginia. As developement, virus and over regulation of fisheries has pretty much put them out of business. Many already have moved on to tug & barge companies like Vane Bros. Now with offshore drilling it ought ot help even more out with jobs. Provided thats what they want to do of course.

This would have been a good idea.

Spills are not the problem with modern systems. Time is.

Look at OPEC. Big drop in price = GIANT drop in production to force it up.

We will NEVER be able to outlast the cartel's economic attacks by drilling because we simply cannot extract enough oil per day without completely destroying the environment. (And I mean complete as in wells that routinely spill oil all over the place)

ANY major development takes a decade at the minimum to have any impact. Even GTL and CTL technology. That is PLENTY of time for OPEC to "discover" a new field and yet again have that hammer to throw.

So at best we can say is. Whohoo! a few million that wont be going to the cartel! or whatever. I guess that means a mid level wont be able to afford a silver plated car this time.

Would have been nice if they were allowed to back then. So, since you have to get started sometime, now is a better time than ever. More jobs, energy independence, responsible and more environmentally sound methods, and all that.

To be clear, I am in favor of drilling. But suggesting it will bring us energy independence is ridiculous. It will help the situation, but by a small amount measured in fractions when you look at yearly consumption.

Well that's sort of like saying:

"Sadly, being born only delays the inevitable result.... dying."

I think whether we eventually run dry or not it makes sense to use the resources we have.

You forgot to include the fact that this won't happen in our lifetime. By then, we will be driving around with mini fusion powerplants in our cars.
