Default Question about hull classification.

Can anyone explain what CV, SS etc stand for? I know they're hull classifications but it doesn't make much sense to me.

SS - Ship submersible

CV - Cruiser, ...something

(I can't remember where I read that)

But they aren't really supposed to make sense

Yes, but I do remember the V standing for a specific word that links to aviation, can't remember which...

EDIT: Ah, your link has it, volplane, says it's only speculation though
