I have been working for a few months now on a GWX 2.1 expanded Mediterranean campaign with more scripted activity based on historical events between 09/41 and 06/45. In order to make it as historical as possible, there are a few ships I am eagerly trying to find (or coax someone into creating
![]() 1. Generic Queen Elizabeth Class Battleship - Representative of HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Barham, HMS Malaya, and HMS Valiant. These ships played such a major role in the Med theater that it begs to have them as an individual class of ships in-game. VonDos's Warspite is a QE class ship, but is the most upgraded and modern example of all the QE ships. With VonDos's permission, Warspite will be certainly included in the campaign, but Warspite is so unique and distinguished in its role that I hate using it as a generic representation of all the Queen Elizabeth class BBs. The Queen Elizabeth that I hope to find would be a more generic representation of the older QE BBs, perhaps based directly off of Malaya or Valiant. 2. HMS Eagle - Must have! Very active in Med events during '42. 3. HMS Ark Royal - Although secondary in priority to HMS Eagle. (Since my mod is only covering the U-boat era in the Med, Sept 41 to June 45, Ark Royal is secondary in priority...she was sunk by U-81 in November 41, only two months after the first u-boats arrived in the Med. Nevertheless, it would be a good inclusion.) 4. Italian Manned Torpedo ('Maiale') - If you're in the right place near Gibralter or Alexandria on the right dates, you might get to wintess an Italian cargo vessel deploying a team of Italian manned topedoes on their way to infiltrate the British harbour. Its not a big priority, but would make for a very cool inclusion. If anyone is up to the task of creating these ships, or knows where I can find these ships for inclusion, please let me know. Thanks in advance! Last edited by sabretwo; 10-26-08 at 08:14 AM. |

Yes it was VonDos who did it, look here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=136508

I was obviously referring to the QE class Battleship Warspite. Yes, it is displayed after refit, but it's better than other alternatives. Never mind, since you knew it existed my previous posts don't matter any more

If worst comes to worst, I'll use the Warspite as a representative of all QE-class BBs. (I'll change the name in the cfg from Warspite to 'Queen Elizabeth class Battleship') But, if its possible to aquire another more generic QE-class, I'd like to reserve VonDos's excellent Warspite for its distinctive and historical role in the scripting. |

It's times like this that makes me wish my modeling skills had grown past the "open the app and make a simple box to play with" stage.
I even just recently got my hands on "Anatomy of The Ship: HMS Warspite" (borrowed it from a friend) with the idea of trying to do some ship modeling. You could use S3D to export the Warspite model into your favorite 3D modeler and make alterations so it matches the older QE class BBs, then clone it into its own unit type.

Thanks, guys!
Mikhayl: If you could make the manned torpedo, that would be fantastic. I have at least three scripted events planned for it involving actual and attempted attacks on British harbors by the Decima Flottiglia MAS. Ibecomelife: Any needed contribution is greatly appreciated. If you could do an HMS Eagle, that would be excellent. I'll script in an Illustrius class for now and substitute your HMS Eagle when you have it ready. It will be a while before its all finished anyway...I am still finishing the random events (improved merchant traffic, fishing activity, air patrols, task forces, etc.) and ports set up (proper warships in ports during various time frames). Once I get into the historical events, I have at least forty planned scripted historical events that I need to script. Ibecomelife, do you mind if I include your improved fishing boats and some of your merchant ships? To avoid potential conflicts and confusion due to the additional ships, I am including a modified GWX 2.1 englishnames.cfg file with all of the new ships included. Thanks again! |

Mikhayl,
That looks great! ![]() I did some more history research and now I have six scripted events for the manned torpedoes. All between 1942 and 1943. Very cool stuff. If time permits, I'm thinking of doing up an Orders executable program in Macromedia Director that will issue mission assignments with consideration to the scripted events in the near future... For example, if you started a mission at La Spezia between 15 July 1943 and 25 July 1943, you would be ordered to rendevous with the Italian Ship Olterra off the coast of Spain on the night of 1 August 1943 and provide security for the Olterra as she deploys to Gibralter. While protecting Olterra submerged on the night of 3 August 1943, you'ld get to witness her deploy three maile on their way to attack ships in Gibralter harbor. Other mission assignments might simply be patrolling certain grids, knowing that the invasion of Sicily will be starting soon...basically putting the player close to the action, but not totally giving it away. (There's nothing more frustrating than patrolling a dead grid several hundreds of kilometers from the action!) |
