Default A simple idea on modding 'rig for silent running' command

I have an idea to mod the 'rig for silent running' command. A simple one really

At present pressing Z or ordering 'rig for silent running' would make our boat to travel at 3 knots.

The problem is that at 3 knots our boat is not actually running silently. If we can change this 3 knots speed to either 2 or 1 knots speed that would be the perfect silent running speed. At that speed DDs are going to have a very difficult job to listen to our propellers(engine) sound though its ASDIC or active sonar would definitely still work like a charm.

So my question is obvious: how do you make ordering for 'rig for silent running' sets our boat speed to 2 or 1 knots speed instead of the current 3 knots.

Changing speed after ordering 'rig for silent running' would not break this mod i.e, the boat may speed up to another speed but no reparing or loading would take place so I see no reason why this idea is a bad idea.

I tried playing with submarine folder tweak files and found no answer to this idea. Does anyone know how to adjust 'rig for silent running' speed to lower values? I'm not a modder. Or is it as I feared? The dreaded word for modders: Hardcoded

Thanks

Try going into data\submarine and opening the .cfg file for whichever sub you want.

You can alter the "ahead slow" speed which means that you'd travel slower whe set to ahead slow (which is used for silent running).

I haven't a clue how it could be applied only when giving the silent running command though.

Hei Quaqmire. yes I looked at that cfg file before but there is nothing there to deal with rig for silent running speed. I even downloaded a mod which replace the back full order to silent speed but it was incompatible with OLC GUI mod so I came up with this simple idea of mine.
But of course we can always set the boat speed to 1 or 2 knots manually through the speed dial...if this idea can't be done

It's been already implemented in GWX since v.101, you need to change the values for AheadSlow in the subs cfg files, when you order silent running the sub speed is set to that.
This are the values from GWX

Uboat 21 :
AheadSlow=0.24

Uboat 2A:
AheadSlow=0.30

Uboat 2D :
AheadSlow=0.26

Uboat 7B:
AheadSlow=0.25

Uboat 7C:
AheadSlow=0.26

Uboat 9B:
AheadSlow=0.28

Uboat 9C:
AheadSlow=0.28

Uboat 9D2:
AheadSlow=0.30

The stock value for the figures Ref just posted are 0.40

that will get you 3 knots out of all the subs, with the exception of the XXI which will get you 8 knots.

Thanks ref not exactly what I had in mind but thanks anyway.
So I guess rig for silent running is hardcoded to be attached with Ahead slow speed eh?

Will changing ahead slow speed change the surface speed? I guess it will. I'm always set my surface speed at ahead slow being paraniod about the fuel status.

It will change both surface and submerged speed. Only if you edit the speed that you travel at 1 knot submerged you will travel at 2 knots on the surface.

if i rig for silent i rig for silent

no reload, no repair, no toilet, no farting, no bernard, no music, no singing, no eating, no drinking, no radio messages, no torpedoe-ing, no breathing, 0.01% of a knot ahead (and thats SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW!) all i need now is red light at this command

This is exactly what I would like to see; I would like lights automatically switch to red every time I order silent running. Does anybody know if this is configurable or not?

Concerning realism: why would you want to do that? Red light was used as a night illumination because red light is less visible through an open tower hatch than white or yellow light is. For underwater operation in order to save energy blue lights were used, because blue lightbulbs with less wattage than normal bulbs could be used to achive the approx same illumination.

Yes, I know it's unrealistic and dum, but I just wanted to know if it can be done. Maybe I just would like to have some kind of "visual feedback" that we are running silent...

Oh ok. Sorry. Sometimes I'm a bit of a realism nut.
And the idea's not dumb. The movie U-571 is dumb

I'd like to see this too. But the last time I talked about it with someone who understand tweaking the interior lights file this is not possible.

We need DivingDuck to answer for sure though. His Readme file for tweaking the interior ambient light sounded like it was possible:hmm:.

Here's the excerpt: Purpose : "The ambient light color for silent runnning may not be changed using them."

My understanding is:
There is no controller to change the lights as far as when they come on and off.
Colors, no problem.
When, problem.
Two Dreaded words.
Hard Code.
