I started playing some SH4 again, on an american sub, since i spent much time on german ones since the expansion. However, the new crew of my brand new boat out of pearl is loaded with skilled crew, which most of them have specialities. Every engineman are engine spec and so forth, I cannot recruit any more officers (petty or other). I feel its kinda dull to start out with a crew that will remain the same through the game. I'd rather get a fresh crew, and develop them as i go on. I think that is a fun part of the game, to get the crew better the more patrols you go on. Any way to fix/mod this issue?. Not using any mods or anything.

Well just throw em all off the boat and load up with scrubs
![]() I think its a 'time of year' thing or rather 'time of war' later in the war you get more experienced crews. |

Indeed it is, however, this way, noone will ever be up for promotion because i already reached the limits. I like the thing with building the crew, instead of starting with a pro crew. Im afraid the seamen found availiable might not cover the needs for the whole boat, but ill give it a go. And oh, thanks for telling me the obvious solution that i completely missed

actually, as americans...we try to qualify our crews before they get on a boat.
so there is no problem with a fully qualified crew...everyone already got their dolphins ![]()

In stock SH4 ver 1.5 as time goes on even though you think your crew is maxed out you will be able to promote some that are above rank 7 as they gain experience right up to Ensign, LT(jg), and LT if you like.
Also, some 7 and higher will gain 'special abilities' and if you have say, numerous 'radio specialists' or 'propulsion specialists' for example, you can remove the duplicates which will open up slots for other crew who are experienced enough to be promoted. That's the way they made SH4 so that's the way you 'play' the stock crew even though it may not be 'realistic'. I'm looking forward to trying the upcoming RFB that is about to be released but I'm glad I experienced stock the way the Dev's made it. IMO they did a great job and now you can pick just about any flavor SH4 you like as the modders release their creations. Happy Hunting! Art |
