Default Modding a Turm, texture problems on import

I'v been trying my hand on some modelling in 3dsmax9.
First I export the Turm7b_1_coning7b_High.obj file from S3D (U-53 Eagle GWX mod) Then I import it into max. Everything looks good. (Export from S3d and import into Max, settings are from Privateer post here

I dont touch the model in Max, to see if it works, so after I export it from here, I go ahead and import it back to its place inside Turm7b_1_hd.dat. Again no errors in s3d. The texture is messed up in the game: (Emblem and top railing)

Then I learn the mtl and obj file needs to be edited, as privateer points out, same thread.

But WHEN do we do this editing.

1) After exporting from S3d before we import into MAX?
or
2) After editing in Max, before importing back to S3d?
or
Both?

Exported MTL file from S3d:

It's got something to do with the cfg#E01 material defined in the mtl file. I know its for the emblem, but an external texture nevertheless. I tried bunch of different combinations, still no go. Found other threads mentioning similar solutions but again confusing. Can somebody please give a small step by step of this cfg#XX editing that needs to be done? Thank you in advance

Thanks for the answer Mikhayl, that made me think the process again, and I'm such a noob . The problem in this case seems to be the MTL file output by S3d has the material names defined as:

newmtl turm 7b_1_95a22071510181e8
...etc

that space character is not recognized by max, I deleted the spaces and changed the cfg#E01... to E01.. inside the mtl file, and matched this material names used in the OBJ file. Now I understand how the mtl file works and defines stuff in obj.

After these text modifications, imported into max, made my changes and exported.
I use 3dmax 9, it worked perfectly, the mtl file created by max didnt need any fiddling. Straight import into S3d, the Turm has correct textures!

I've just started learning this stuff, there are some nice tutorials around. I hope to do some editing to the VII-B Turm, similar to suggested things in the other early war type 7 thread.
