Default Hey, You Just Stole 5400tons Of Mine!

I'm on patrol in July'43 near Rabaul. Just nearing dusk (one of those beautiful PE4 dusks) my radioman picks up a radar contact at long range. After some plotting, it's obvious this guy is headed to Rabaul. It looks to be a perfect setup: I'm already in position, and night is comeing!

After watching the blip on the radar screen get closer and closer, I could finally start to make out the faint signes of smoke on the horizon. Whan he is about 7oooyds away, I go to Periscope depth. The Sun is still up alittle and the sea is flat calm, so I know I'll be easier to see. My soundman immediately picks him up on Sonar. I order periscope depth for a peek. I identify him as a Medium Old Split Freighter, and he's heading on a perfect course. Down scope!! I let my soundman track him until he's within range. Up scope! He's now 3000yds and closing! Down scope!

I decide to man the sonar myself for a listen. Nothing! What theHell! Up scope! There befor my eyes is my prize in flames!! Who fired without my orders?? BERNARD!!!! It wasn't him, the poor guy. I go to external view and hear the drone of aircraft. I look around and spot 2 Liberators flying into the sunset takeing my 5400 tons with them! I truely love this game!!

:hmm: ...Look at it this way:

when my wife tells me she bought a lottery ticket, I complain...if you win then I'll have to drive all the way to the state capitol to pick up the millions...

Just look at all the work those Liberators saved you...now you can kick back, relax and enjoy that sunset...

I have never... ever... seen that.

I keep hoping to get in the middle of a fleet battle, or at least see the AI mix it up.

It might be the mods I use /shrug.

What are you using besides PE4 ?

I never noticed any action like that before version 1.5. Now it happens fairly regularly.... at least in the unmodded SHIV 1.5.

The first patrol I did under 1.5 ,I witnessed a Jap Task force take out an entire small American Convoy. I was amazed because that had never happened before that I had noticed.

Hi SteamWake, besides PE4, I'm also running RFB, RSRD, and OM. I feel ALL these mods are needed to get the most imersive, realistic atmosphere that this sim has to offer. I'm still hopeing that somewhere down the line one of our talented modders will take this project on: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...highlight=PB4Y

Based on the Liberator, it shouldn't be that hard.

Just havent seen any of this type of action. Maybe its a time of year thing.

I had something similar happen to me, but i was on the reciving end! I was in the middle of patroling (dont ask me where...its very top secret, very hush hush..so secret, that i dont even know) when i pick up two liberty cargos sailing right threw my hunting grounds! So i'm thinking, eh...what the heck, i'll escort 'em. couple of hours later, pick up 2 planes inbound. I order the crew to man the AAs and engage all enemies. the Cargos are between me and the planes, so they are the targets, naturally. we splash the first plane before he even has a chance to release his payload, but the second got lucky and nailed one of the cargos, splitting it in half. Sad sight to see a friendly ship sink, but at least it wasnt me! Kinda nice to know that i'm not the only thing that matters to Japan. I dont remember what mods i was running, this was a couple of months ago. As Steamwake said, i'm still hoping to get into a fleet vs fleet battle, or see some AI to AI combat. Can anyone say epic?

Yes, Liberators are tough guys, give no mercy.

On the other hand, it is really funny to watch when a thing like this

tries to attack merchies instead of attacking an AI sub nearby. :rotfl:

Still waiting on a full task force battle myself.

The only similar encounter I had was 2 friendlies attacking a sub chaser who was guarding a port entrance (way to go )... Gave me the opportunity to take a peak, shame the harbor was empty .

Can't remember which harbor but wondered where the hell they came from as it was well in enemy territory.

Twice I have seen unexplained damage to ships.

Once when I was about 5 miles out from Midway heading in I saw smoke. When I got closer I saw it was a PT boat on fire. Don't know how it happened. After a bit he came down past me off my starboard side as to look me over. Still on fire but acted like he hadn't a care in the world.

The other time involved a Japanese destroyer off the coast of China. I had gone deep to hide after a strike on the convey and was checking out things topside with the EV camera. I heard an explosion and one of the destroyers had suffered damage, fire was just forward the depthcharge racks. I thought maybe he took a hit from an H8K as they aren't exactly on the nose a lot of time with their high-level drops. He acted only slightly shook up, later when all had left he was still in the area either trying to find me or lost alltogether. I don't recall having any H8K's in the area, just a Betty that dropped a load that wasn't even close.

In really high seas one night, I was setting up an intercept on a Large Modern Tanker. I was stoked about the heavy tonnage headed my way, only 3000 yards away, steady at 9 knots. The seas were pretty high, and it was pretty dark, so I left my periscope up (this was also my first planned intercept, so I was not confident of my measurements).

Suddenly, the ship slows. 6 knots. Has it seen me? Surely not, we're 3000 yards away. And wouldn't he speed up if he saw a periscope staring back at him from the depths? No mind, keep watching. Legion's noob guide says to be patient, I'm not going to ruin my shot at... looks like 1200 yards because of impatience. 4 knots now, something odd is going on. She's stopped at 2600 yards. Flood tube 1, just in case. "Enemy Unit Destroyed!" What!? *Checks ships log* I didn't get credit for it, darn it. I had him! This close, THIIIIS close!

I can only assume that I watched him founder in high seas, presumably the waves breaking over his deck flooded his forward compartments (They didn't know how to batten down the hatches, I guess), as he went down by the bow.

That is an odd one about the tanker. What method do you use to calculate speed? I probably wouldn't have picked up the fact that he slowed from 6 to 4 knots. Mostly I cheat and use the map plot and get a rough ratio of his speed over a given time in relation to mine. I simply mark our present positions, wait a few minutes and remark, then compare. If I am going 3 knots and have covered 150 yards and he has covered 300, then I assume he is going 6 knots.

Perhaps in the game they accounted for damage due to rough seas. On radar once in a pass I noticed a ship that apparently hit an island and sunk during a heavy storm. It just hit it, backed off, next thing I know there was the sunken ship symbol in it's place.
