Default We the People

I'm sure many of you noticed the sticky thread for raymond6751's book, "We The People".

I originally intended this to be a full review, but after 3 tries I can't seem to write one that is more effective than his blurb without giving away spoilers. I guess I'm as bad at book reports now as I was in high school. If only I had payed more attention to literary criticism !

All I can say is that it is a good book, exceptionally well-written, especially considering that it's author is a new writer. Intelligently written without venturing into the domain of prose. The plot falls into the realms of science-fiction and mystery-thrillers, which I do not typically read, but I have read "We The People" twice now and I am ordering book today because I think I will read it again.

For those of you that missed the sticky, proceeds go to the Canadian Cancer Society. raymond6751 also encourages you to give to your local cancer research and/or relief socities if you like the book.

He has also, personally told me that the downloadable version I originally bought may be distributed as long as it is not for profit. I am willing to send my electronic copy of the book to anyone who would like to read it, for free. If you enjoy it, consider a donation to any cancer research/relief group.

In summation; We have a rare opportunity here to support an excellent, albeit budding author and also contribute to the relief and eventual destruction of a devestating disease.

Many of you know me as the guy who would typically be opposed to federal funding of cancer research, or any other research for that matter. In case you haven't guessed or been hit over the head repeatedly with the idea by me I am a Libertarian. But I can still, of my own volition, vehemently support a cause like this.
As a community, we have the ability to do a little bit extra for society here. Raymond is a person who deserves our support. Who writes a book that simultaneously entertains people and asks them for help in defeating cancer? Not me! Every time I have entertained the thought of writing something it has been for personal gain, not for selfless dedication to a good cause.

Again I emphasize that I will send you the book via e-mail for free. Simply PM me or write me at lcplmaryott605@yahoo.com , even if you don't like the genre or somehow dislike the writing style, you can send it to friends who may be more inclined toward this type of literature than you are.

Furthermore, I will donate an additional $30 to subsim if this post is stickied for at least 10 days and also donate $30 to some local cancer charity that I haven't looked up yet. Actually, if this isn't stickied I will donate both amounts anyways, eventually, but not with as much urgency!

Please, support cancer research and support a talented, selfless author by buying his book or getting it from me for free ( I am sure 70% of you will buy the physical copy of it once you read it).

Best regards to all,

-The Lance

Remove your email addy, take a picture of it with a screenshot program, and then repost using imageshack. This will save you from some bot scrounging for email addresses, and save you a ton of SPAM!!!!

A few bots can read pictures, but most can't.

Thanks guys but I will leave it there for two reasons;

1) In proud support of this cause

and 2), Somewhat less nobly, I have a mac and a modicum of computer maintenance ability. I fear neither malware nor spam.

ps. I normally don't care if my threads are derailed but please do not make this a pc-vs. mac thread. For once in my entrie existence here I am totally serious.

Please join me

Default Thanks

Thanks UnderseaLcpl for the kind words. I appreciate those, and wanting to help the cause.

Incidentally, downloading the ebook version of the book allows me to donate $5 to the Cancer folks. Those who want to read first, go ahead and contact Undersealcpl.

As a writer, I definitely want readers.

If you missed my thread earlier, you can read the details here: raymond6751.wordpress.com or mike-raymond.com or mike-raymond.blogspot.com
or search around page 4-5 in the General Topics Forum.

Thanks
Michael Raymond

Can we talk about the "C" word here or should we start a thread about cancer, which would probably be as popular as talking about Mac's and PC's (ha, ha I said it).

At sixty-four I sure don't want it, perhaps it's not too late for you younger chaps to change your life style to prevent it.

Raymond,

After reading about your fund-raising for cancer research as well as the snippets of your book, I have just bought a paperback copy. I don't know if this allows you to donate any money to your charity so I am making a donation to Cancer Research UK as well. I look forward to receiving your book and will most probably recommend it to all and sundry as well.

Heres to the future.

Brendan

I don't have any objections to either. Please just keep the focus on cancer and/or fundraising efforts if you want to talk about it in this thread.

btw, Tango, thanks for supporting raymond and Cancer Research UK.

Here's a study done on only 30 prostrate cancer patients that volunteered to drastically change their lives to see what their molecules would do. Again it's only thirty people, but the news is very encouraging.

Changing diet, exercise found to extend lives

A carefully limited pilot study of 30 prostate cancer patients by scientists and doctors at UCSF and a Sausalito research institute indicates for the first time that major lifestyle changes may prevent early cell death and lengthen human life.

The study was led by Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, the UCSF biochemist famed for discovering the mysterious proteins called telomeres that cap the ends of chromosomes and control the longevity of dividing cells.

But if these early findings are confirmed, they say, "this might be a powerful motivator for many people to beneficially change their diet and lifestyle."

The research team studied the levels of an enzyme called telomerase in the prostate tissue of the 30 cancer patients who had volunteered to follow a low-fat diet, exercise moderately and reduce their stress. After only three months, 24 patients showed a highly significant increase in their telomerase levels - an indication that the cell-protecting telomeres in their cells were being restored.

The telomerase enzyme was discovered by Blackburn and her colleagues in 1984, and is considered crucial because it repairs telomeres that are in the process of dying and thus prevents the death of many human cells.

Telomerase has often been hailed as the "immortalizing enzyme." The long telomere proteins protect the ends of chromosomes in the body, but they shorten naturally and ultimately die unless the telomerase enzyme acts to repair them and increase their length.
Shortened telomeres, in fact, are often an indicator of disease risk and premature death in many types of cancer.

In June, Ornish, the director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, and Dr. Peter Carroll, a UCSF prostate cancer specialist, reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that after only three months of living by Ornish's strict diet and stress-control regimen, they observed significant changes in the cancer-causing genes within the prostate tissue of the same 30 cancer patients used in the Blackburn study.

So even with only 30 patients, Jue said, the association between their extremely healthy habits and the increased amount of telomerase proved highly significant.

"But at this point one can only speculate that the change in lifestyle is a cause of the increase in telomerase levels," she said.
