Default IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey

IL2 goes console

http://simflight.com/2008/06/il-2-st...-goes-console/

In a press release 505 Games reports that they’ll ” …. be bringing 1C Publishing’s IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey to the console market for the first time. Developed by Gaijin Entertainment for Xbox 360 and PS3, DiP Interactive for Nintendo DS and DYNAMICSYSTEMS for PSP, the game takes place during the greatest aerial battles of all time (discounting Pterosaurs) and boasts the most realistic landscapes and aircraft seen in any flight sim. IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey will be published by 505 Games under the 1C Label and is due for a 2009 release……”.

“…..IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is based around large-scale aerial combat over the ground-based military operations of World War II. Players participate in the war’s most famous confrontations piloting fighters, battle planes or heavy bombers across a range of thrilling missions. There are five seats of war to engage in – The Battle of Britain, Stalingrad, Berlin, Sicily and Korsun – representing the main airborne battles of World War II in Europe…..”.

As long as they concentrate on SoW and leave somebody else to develop BoP, I don't care

IL-2 isn't really a game that could fit on a console

I think it has been explicitly stated that BoP will be developed by another team, and will not use the SoW engine. So Sow should not be delayed, though I am not 100% convinved.

Am I the only one here who thinks it could work? It's not like they said they're going to turn the game into Blazing Angels. They're just going to tone down some aspects which would be difficult on a console controller. (Which would be a good thing, because IL-2 succumbs to the "BAD CONTROLS = GOOD SIM" cliche at times.)

Besides, it's not like a sim can't be handled with a controller. Plenty of people use and prefer controllers for games like Flight Simulator.

Well, I suppose it COULD work, but I'm betting more on SoW at the moment

I don't blame you for that. What I get a kick out of is old fanboys who would think removing things like "manual prop pitch" instantly leads to = dumbed down game. Like I said, their's a notion amongst simmers that the best sim is the one in which the player needs to micro manage every living minute of their existence in the game world.

Well, I'm of the school that likes to "micro-manage" what the real pilots, sub commanders had to micromanage, within reason and fun. Real pilots didn't fly and drop bombs and man guns in bombers, I like to fly and drop bombs but leave the rest to the AI. Same story with manual torpedo aim, I like the SH4 system as it corresponds to what a captain would do, look through the scope give data and let the crew make the calcs input the TDC. Similarly with manual prop pitch, I like that planes had different levels of automatic systems.

But it can be a choice.

Micromanaging stuff like the Prop Pitch is fine, but the game could be realistic without it as well

I actually think that BoP will be a good thing. Sometimes I crave for a game that lets me just concentrate on the flying / shooting, while not getting completely unrealistic (like those pure action flight games). Anyone played Wings by Cinemaware? That was such a game.

Besides the engine, does this actually have anything to do with Maddox games? Do they get money that they might need to get over the winter if Sow is released in 2009?

I wonder if the market is big enough for it to be a big earner? I mean, is there many console players that's interested in Flight Sims? Is there many flight sims to console to start with?

I have seen many people who went like *I would like to play a flightsim too* but they usually give up when they see that they have to configure their pc and study the manual really hard. Then they usually go *nooo I don't have time for that*.

Or I think of my 7-year-old nephew kind of likes flight sims too, with unlimited ammo, god mode, etc. That little brat was incredulous when I tried to explain to him that he must learn deflection shooting and not always point at the plane directly :rotfl:

So yes, I think there is a market, and some people might take the next step and play real sims after BoP. I believe.

Just btw everyone who wants to play a new flight sim now should definitely have a look at Battle of Britain 2, the long awaited patch 2.08 was just released and is graphically now at least on a level with IL2 (campaign and AI wise it has been superior for a long time already).

More info in this thread (attention screenshot heavy):

http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/...ic.php?t=10952

I think this has slowly and silently developed into the most enjoyable flight sim on the market.
