Convoys

Is there a set time that you can encounter Japanese convoys? Its September 1942 and i've been on several patrols, but on each patrol I've only ever encountered lone ships instead of convoy's or task forces.

Is there a certain area convoys "hang around" per say?

I think they stick to sea-lanes, instead of just free roaming like some single merchants. Exact placement and timing seems to be fairly random.
