Wierd experience

Here I am in my 12th mission near gibraltar attacking a convoy. I already took out two dd's and some other ships. Took some damage but surrvied. Lined up for last shot when I start taking damage running at periscope depth. Nothing on sonar to resemble a warship. Only merchants. When i spin to look to port alas the culpurt. A surfaced sub with no flag is firing his flak and deck guns at me. He had red bottom paint and no markings.I pulled down the scope and trailed him. I surfaced off his stern manned my deck gun and alas no ammo. I am confused as I never fired the gun the whole cruise. Dove down and returned to base. Took snapshot but don't know where to find it.
