Default Waiting for the war...

During the week-end I could finally go for a little hunt - I don't have much time for playing and I got once more frustrated.
I got my copy of the Submarine Commander by Ben Bryant and wanted to try out what I learned. I started an alternative career in the 2nd Flotilla, under a beautiful blue sky (thanks!) and sailed - through the Channel since it was in August - to my BF16 grid which I knew to be the best one. Even before getting there I recieved the Funkspruch from GWX saying that Uboote of the 1st and 2nd Flotillas shouldn't return to their bases... Twenty days of aqiting for the war to begin is long even using the time compression, especially when all those ships are sailing around and I can't torpedo them! Between September 1st and 3rd i got oe convoy of British ships with escort including one Polish destroyer which I tried to attack but I screwed it up. Anyway I was surprised to find such a formation at that moment.
Then the sea became empty... Except one single freighter which I almost got, during the night and on surface, TDC off and using just the chart of deflection angles... But when I got close I saw the American Ensign!
Is there any means of choosing the date of departure more precisely so I don't have to stay at sea 20 days just waiting? I verified that U-34 for exemple left Wilhelmshaven at August 19th and they scored 2 ships sunk and one captured when homebound. Or I'd better make a tour in the North Sea and go back before the war starts just to give some experience to my crew?
Or I simply switch my Start Date in SHIII Commander to September? It zould be nice anyway to be on position just in time.

Welcome aboard Kpt. Weyprecht

Ensure SH3 Commander is set at 20 days between patrols.

On the 4th day of your first patrol you will receive a radio message recalling you to base.

This means your second patrol should commence on 24th giving you one week to get into position prior to the commencement of hostilities.....just as in RL.

Default Patrols

Thanks for hints, I'll try them zhen I have a moment of free time - SH doesn't run on my notebook.

There is one more thing I recall - i met twice a Patrouilleboot, in the middle of the night. I dived and crept away, and just after that I read Bryant's account of sinking Italian A/S vessels with their ill-designed canon dating back from 1915. I'm sure you tried this a couple of times - is it worth trying or rather useless risk? Any tactical tricks?

Not a good idea to tangle with any warship with your deck gun. But, to each his own. If you start sinking neutrals, you may be in for big time problems down the road. As JB stated, follow the outline, you'll find plenty of good fishing once hostilities commence. And welcome aboard!
