Default The nerdiest thing that you've ever done while playing a simulation game...

I was discussing the topic of simulation games with a friend of mine and somehow we got into the topic of being nerdy while playing with one (Something I have VERY first hand experience with... read on). He told me that once, when he was in college, he went over to his friend's dorm room to see if he wanted to join him at the local bar for darts and beer. He said that when he walked into the room, he found his friend sitting next to another friend. They had multiple monitors and flight sticks with rudder pedals hooked up to a computer running one of the Microstoft Flight Simulators. When he asked if they wanted to go out for beer, they replied that they couldn't because they were flying from New York to Paris and it would take a few hours to get there. One guy was the pilot and the other was being the co-pilot and they also made the point that airline pilots shouldn't drink while flying.

I scoffed and told him I could top that. No one beats my nerdiness ! NOBODY !! (I have yet to find someone who's come close):rotfl: !

Back YEARS ago, when I first discovered the spaceflight simulator, ORBITER, I ended up with a week vacation durring a very inopportune time to go out with anyone or do anything. My girlfriend was working two jobs at the time, my friends were all either working or had moved away. I decided that I was going to fly to the Moon and back.... NERD style.

I started by pulling a mini-fridge and my small microwave into my room and filled it up with astronaut friendly food (mostly sandwitches and such... even those juice bags you poke the straws through). I then sectioned off my entire room with sheets and pretty much designed my own Lunar Module, and Lunar Lander control area/living space. I made it so I could swivel the monitor and keyboard around when I went in between the two (They were connected by a gap in the sheets).

I then spent three weeks before my vacation randomly inside my makeshift spacecraft/tent flying around the moon, figuring out where I wanted to land.. and pretty much assembling my entire flight plan.

I then flew from launch on top of a Saturn 5 rocket to the moon and back in real time flying the historical vehicles. The only time I left my improvised spacecraft was to use the facilities (of course) and I permitted myself a day to wander around my house when I landed on the moon's surface. But then, it was back into the spacecraft and back to Earth realtime again to splash down exactly on target near the US Navy ships waiting to pick me up.

All I can say is.. the experience made me SORE... VERY VERY VERY sore... and BOY did that shower feel good when I got back to Earth (God forbid if there were two of us on that mission together !) :rotfl:

My friend after hearing that declared me the "Nerd King".
I am KING of all Nerds !

I was just wondering if anyone here has done anything nerdy while playing a sim (that you'll admit to... hehehe) that can come close to beating me and taking my title ? :rotfl:

I think you're going to win this one. Just using the voice recognition software in Enigma Rising Tide made me feel uber nerdy. lol

I was waiting for this to continue "..which I had covered in fine sand and ashes..". :p

Kudos to you, mate! Would love to do something like this, for a flightsim. Build a very own cockpit with full working buttons etc, oh and of course the whole cockpit would be force feedback . Seen few do it, very nice.

Edit: Aaand of course it would have very short wings, with nav lights and some lights on the side/nose, so that when I press the trigger they would start to flash rapidly. *drool*

I use a real NFL coaches headset when playing Head Coach - it lets you bark the plays to the players, like:

Thunder, 2, Go!

Understand sand and ash all over the floors and in the carpets... Ya right, you will be darn lucky if she only decides to crucify you on the front lawn.

I would suggest building yourself a sandbox in the back yard and playing in it instead, that way she will just think your crazy.

lol, i think the nerdiest thing I've ever done is fly from Sheffield City to Liverpool in RT on FS2004 using all lights and instruments and ATC. Not quite as nerdy as the shuttle to the moon I know. However I do play WoW.

Well, she already thinks I'm crazy, so that's half the battle. I guess since I'll have to actually go OUTSIDE to take the soil and ash and rock samples, I'll need to design and build a space suit too. (She'd probably expect that from me anyway. Same thing with the neighbors . Since I'm also an expreimental musician, they're used to strange, horrifying sounds coming out of this room when the windows are open so I'm sure me walking around the backyard in a space suit would be nothing new to them)

The other problem I'll have to overcome is my wife forcing me OUT of the spacecraft multiple times in flight.
"I'm sorry dear ! I can't take out the garbage !!! I'm 500+ miles above the Earth !!! STOP TEARING MY SPACESHIP APART !!! THERE'S NOTHING BUT COLD VACUME OUT THERE !!!! HOUSTON !!! MAYDAY !!! YAAAAAAAAA !!!!! " Yeah... that'll go over real well !

Assure your wife that your expedition is for the good of the relationship. Or get her to join the "million miles high" club

lol, it's from the New York intro trailer in World in Conflict.
I just used Fraps to record it on the game and Video Avatar (http://www.geovid.com/Video_Avatar/) to convert it.
