okay my friend and i play sh3...a lot after gwx 2.0
but there was an interesting situation i was struck with last night okay situation, 64% realism, (scrennie whore, dont like setting up shots myself, although i am kinda good at it, and i like a couple of other things that i cant very well remember) coming across a random destroyer around the shetlands, the destroyer somehow (note use of somehow, i was silent running and i resisted the urge to talk even in my own D4mn room.) detected me, and led to about 15 minutes of subsequent D/Cing. i am not a fan of the old sit, wait, and slip away thing. sooooooo i jump up to peri depth while he circles (i have this honor system where i dont use the ext cam to see where the things coming from)and i join him in his turning, now i have to go ahead flank to keep up with that cirlcing, and i wait. i know german torpedoes have abouta 300 meter arming distance, but i line up a perfect shot, and its at 275, i slow my turn and try again. thankfully, im good at conserving batteries and have quite a bit of juice left (about 70%) eventually, i line up a shot at 315 meters and fire one! well, the rest is history, adknowledging that impatience has its virtues. the destroyer took the hit under the magazine and just went BOOM! i sat in front of my computer with this look ![]() while my friend rolled on the floor laughig in amazement Recommended tactic, simmers? you tell me

Ya I do that too. Its tougher when there is more than one but can be done. When I attack convoys I always save one torpedo for an escort just in case. Only thing that could make it worse if that torpedo is a dud.

I hunt boats down the old way, the way real U-boat Captains did it. I don't go into harbors and play with enemy DD's or risk myself, my crew, and my U-boat.

If it's DD hunting you want the best method is to let him do what he wants to and come perpendicular to you. You should be at 1/3 speed 0 rudder.
As he closes the last 400m or so flank ahead and hard rudder towards him. The dd will attempt to follow you but at the 20-something kts he is doing he won't be able to and will swing his stern away. You should dust off his beam at about 80m from the depth charge track. Ahead slow full opposite rudder. The DD will make a wide circle at about 12kts directly across your bow 400-600 yds out Prep a tube for impact/fast 2m and put your periscope crosshairs on 10 or 350 degrees, depending on which side he approaches from. When his bow crosses the line fire ( don't forget to open tube or you will likely miss astern) If you are using g7e you need a 15 degree lead angle. Since you have manual targeting off I guess you can just fire when the arrow is green. This can also be done to set up a stern shot but will take too long to explain. Do it a few times to get the feel of the destroyer's behavior and the many variations of this technique will make themselves clear to you. To date (June '40) I have sunk 14 destroyers and 2 ASW trawlers for their impudence. Even managed to tackle 3 at one time....alll went to the bottom. One final note.... DO NOT try this on dd's with K-guns. That requires a head on approach with a great deal of precision either to land a down the throat shot or to slip in between tha gaps of the stern racks and the kguns, and you WILL take damage. For them the best answer is stay away or Zaunkonig. The destroyer's greatest weakness is thinking HE is the hunter....

![]() ![]() That's because I only play at 90% realism with manual targeting disabled. ![]() |
