having just started playing i have two careers going. one at 100% realism and one at well, stupid easy(manual targetting)
so, i decided to start a career in 1945 and give myself some of these cuties. i fired two and turned around so they'd home on me. flank speed at full rudder in either direction - they could never get close enough. i backed off on the speed and one hit. right around the starbord engine compartment. i figured - uhh-ohh damage control GO! and waited for the "death" screen. but no. nothing! so i did it again. long story short - my sub sustained two torpedo hits from the cuties and i could still dive to 100m+ (though with a rediculous up-angle) it finaly sank when it got to around 120m or so i think. maybe it was deeper. uhhhh something can't be right ... can it? |

Actually, and I know it will surprise you, we aren't supposed to shoot ourselves with cuties. But Cuties had a small explosive charge, designed to disable the propeller and rudder of the target ship. It wasn't very powerful at all. It also had a top speed of 10 knots.
That being said, in real life, after being hit by your own Cutie, you would most likely not be able to submerge. If you did, you would have at least one flooded compartment, probably engine rooms, which would make submerging a last resort measure. Metric measurements on American subs? Just for that I'm installing an English speaking crew and imperial measurements on a U-Boat.:rotfl:

haha i use the metric system because it's easier to remember 10s. Also, I use it because when i actually use my testicles and use the manual targeting, i have ship lengths in meters - and i'm too lazy to convert.
![]() ![]() i know you're not SUPPOSED to shoot yourself with cuties. but i wanted to see what they're all about. seems pretty neat - and i'm surprised i've never heard about them in any WW2 sub book. I did have a fully flooded engine compartment - but was still able to make 17knts. so go figure. then after that i hit myself again and this one got me in the aft torpedo room. i could see straight through my ship to the other side of the hull. and it wouldn't sink untill depth meter showed 140m or so. it's just a "sim" so i guess i can't really complain. |

I write stories. Sci-Fi and such. In these stories, if there are humans, they inevitably use the metric system. It's a more logical, sensible system, that will eventually be what everyone uses.
That said, it drives me batty when I have to 'think in metric'. I manage some degree of SH3 competency by remembering that a meter is 'sorta like a yard'. So, while metric is the future, right now I want my yards, feet, and inches, thank you very much. ![]() Additional note: Hate that there's no good 'foot' equiv. in metric. It seems like any system should have a measurement for about that distance.

As a builder in Britain I have become quite happy using both Imperial and Metric.
![]() I generally calulate areas and volumes in Metric but not always. If I'm dealing with an older chap I tend to talk in feet and inches, a young guy and it'll be metres and millimeters. (Only seamstresses use centimeters ![]() It can be a pain trying to match new Metric materials to existing Imperial stuff, especially brickwork and plumbing. I'd walk 100meters but if it's a mile then I'll drive ![]() |
