Default Complete beginner looking for advice...

Hi guys, I've always wanted a subsim, and the other day I went and picked up DW on Steam. SH4 looked better graphically, but DW seemed much more rounded. Plus, a demo really helped! I know almost nothing about subs, planes or boats but am loving the game so far.

So, my question is... what are the best mods for the game? I'm after the ones which either graphically, or sound-wise enhance the game, but don't muck with the gameplay by adding features, or subs, or anything else I can't handle at the moment I've seen quite a few, but it's not obvious which ones are the later ones, or which ones really add to the game in a, "You must have this" way. Thanks to anyone that can offer a bit of advice.

Are you a red kapitan? If so you need crazy Ivan's Russian sound pack. It gives all Russian boats real Russian crews, not people with bad Russian accents. You'll have to do a little work to get the sounds in game, but I promise it's very easy, it sounds like more work than it is.

Also, are you a kilo kapitan? If so you also need the binocular and periscope reticules.

Binocular reticule: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=126588
Periscope reticule: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=126344

Have a look around the downloads section here: http://www.subguru.com/
You can find crazy Ivan's Russian sound pack there. Not to mention there are alot of scenarios there.

Thanks Reaper51... those are great, although I might stick with the bad russian accents for a while, just while learning

Do you know which of the sound mods on Subguru are the better ones?

Yah, you probably should. But after you get used to the game, you should defiantly get it. It really makes the Russian boats more fun to play.

As for other sound mods, well I've only tried one. I can't think what it's called, but it's got sounds from a real sub. It's pretty cool, but it adds an annoying "pop" sound to everything. But if you don't mind that, it's pretty good.

Also, once you start looking for mods check out alfa tau. It adds new models, and playables to the game. It's has a gorgeous kilo model, I posted a picture of it in the screenshot thread.
