Default I love SHIII but...

The purpose of this thread is twofold:

1) I've played quite a bit of SHIII in the past, and loved it, but I never finished it so i'm going back in... can someone recommend a small selection of essential mods (i've always run it vanilla in the past). Also once I'm done with SHIII where do I go from there? SH5? (I actually have SH5 but I tried it for a couple of hours once and gave up completely mystified)

2) I need to post to reinstate my download privileges, so although I may be able to glean answers to (1) using the search function, as I'm being pointlessly forced to post I may as well make a thread of it. /annoyed

First of all, welcome back.

Probably the single best recommendation for a catch-all supermod would be GWX. It gives the most complete balance between advanced gameplay and fun stuff to look at. If you want more get SH3 Commander, which does for your career what GWX does for the game. After that it's all candy. Try this thread if you want to get a taste of just what's available after that.

Why go anywhere? If you want a change, SH4 offers American fleet boats in the Pacific, or you can use Operation Monsun for a slightly different take on the u-boats. SH5 is much better with the mods that have been done, but it's still waiting on multiple u-boat types and merchant types, and some more fine tuning.

I'm sorry you're annoyed, but Subsim has 80,000 members now, and a whole lot of downloads every day. That bandwidth costs money, and all that is asked for is participation in the community. If you don't want to participate in the community, for a small donation you can have unlimited downloads.

Hmm, ok, so SH5 isn't quite up to scratch then, I guess I'll get SH4 if i want more.

I'm more than happy to participate, and I did actually just make a donation before posting this thread. Perhaps something else is preventing my downloads, i'll try again.

Welcome back!

Essential & great-to-have resources:

I would highly recommend installing the hardcode fixes by H.sie and the MAGUI.

OK, now i'm struggling with the mouse sensitivity, is there anyway to change it? at the moment when I try to aim the deck gun or use the binos to get a range, moving my mouse up and down seems to translate into half inch jumps on the screen... i'm going to need more fidelity if i'm goign to resist throwing my mouse out the window...

When you are in deckgun view, are you using the scroll wheel to zoom the view in? When you do, you can use the up/down arrows to adjust the range, which can be found on the left side of the gun sight view.

Any tips on crew management?

especially what Morale, Endurance, and Resilience mean and actually do and how to manage them. I've looked through the manuals and done some searching on the forum but I'm none the wiser.

I'm just running GWX.

Use SH3 Commander. It's not a mod, but an external program that lets you control Fatigue. Set it for "No Fatigue". In real life they rotate themselves in shifts (corrected in SH4) but that is one of the most annoying things about SH3. Then use Commander to award qualifications to all petty officers, as they had them in real life. Commander will also give your captain a realistic background and career track, as well as giving real names to every ship you sink. Basically it does for your career what GWX does for the game experience.

As to your question: Morale controls how well the men do their jobs. If it's low they have trouble getting motivated. Endurance controls how long they can stay on station without getting so tired they can't function anymore. Resilience controls (I think) how badly wounded they can be and still function. As I said, with Commander I don't worry about any of that, just whether they're wounded or not.

I'm having a hard time with the mouse as well. I didn't notice a problem with it when I was playing the vanilla game, but today running GWX and OLC I can't seem to move my cursor in periscope view with any precision at all. It'll jump in large (1/2") increments.

Thoughts?

Three suggestions:

1) The SHFT and CTRL keys control cursor response speed. SHFT speeds it up. CTRL slows it down. This works whether you are controlling the cursor with the mouse or the arrow keys.

2) Try this antilag patch: http://www.gamefront.com/files/17199140. It may help.

3) Remove some of the more graphics-intensive mods you are using (if any). Using CTRL-F8, keep an eye on your frame rate. Try to keep it above 20-25 fps. Eliminate eyecandy that doesn't affect gameplay if you have to. I know it hurts, but the game is no fun if you can't play it.

Good luck. Please post your results. (Helps others.)

Okay, so this is what I've attempted this morning -
I disabled OLC and the mouse movement is BETTER, but it's still obvious that it "clicks" onto grids when moving the periscope. So I'm thinking it's the actual game and not a mod.

1 - This didn't seem to have an obvious effect, even after hitting either button 30+ times. Nothing seemed to change.

2 - I went ahead and DL'ed/Installed this

3 - Frame rate isn't an issue. This machine runs Skyrim with the visuals maxed out and stays above 60fps. I went ahead and checked with this and in the sub it was reading 6XX and flying around in God mode outside the ship was 4XX.

Does anyone else notice this "snap to grid" feeling? Is it the game and I never noticed it before or what?

You must hold the CTRL key down while moving the cursor. Pressing the key and releasing doesn't have any effect. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

AFAIK, there is no "grid" for cursor movement in the game. Cursor movement for me (and, I think, for a successful installation) is completely free and constrained only by screen resolution. You seem to be experiencing a problem with either your installation or your hardware, and the game is neither working correctly nor typically. What frame rates are you seeing while you are experiencing the erratic cursor movement?

I discovered that RIGHT before heading to work, and didn't have enough time to post such.

Even with Ctrl held (which is light years better) there is still a bit of snapping. My FPS while this happens doesn't change from when I'm doing other things in the game, so I'm chalking it up to resolution (running it windowed) or it just being an older game at this point. Either way, I believe with the Ctrl fix that'll be enough for me to overlook in order to enjoy and play the game.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions.
