Default Chart symbols

Have latest TMO (non-Uboat)...latest RSRD (thru Patch 3)...first mission to Toyko Bay...and I notice symbols on the Nav Chart...ie, "4", "6A", "Corridor I"...etc. Please advise their use and any active/interactive use Captain's can/will make of them. Thanks.

I assumed that they were historic patrol area designations added to the map for immersion, but ...?

Default CHARTS

I had hoped they would be somehow linked to incoming radio msgs from HQ...or would be integrated into the Logbook...or have some usage other than "nice to have" eye candy. Thanks for the response.
