"Way faster"? How fast was it? Are there recorded numbers?

I think those are in Sensors_sub_US.sim file for fleetboats
Attack periscope node 11 and there's the ext_time,
that's probably the extension time.
Obs.Peri. is at node 17.

For uBoatz, Senzori_UBoot.sim,
Attack Peri. at node 31
and Obs.Peri at node 33

Used teh tool --> S3D.

No I didn't test it right now, but I remember hassling with those values sometime ago.

Just someone's unsubstantiated opinion, Steve. People must have ADD if they can't wait 10 seconds for a periscope to come to full extension to see the sunk. :p

it shoots out like a rocket! and the point of a scope is to sneak whats up there, and then disappear again. the time the scope is up, is a risk.

but thnx for the help!

>

I'v set the speed to 3 instead of 10, and it works perfect!

I wouldn't rely on a movie to determine historical facts. In regards to 'scope speed, any time the crew is waiting on the 'scope to extend is time they have to fill with dialogue, something else to attract the viewer... or it's "dead space".

My way of looking at it: The 'scope has to extend thirty feet or so. It certainly isn't going to do it instantly. The default time is fine. If y'all wanna speed it up, that's fine... but don't claim it's historical.

good point, but:

in WW2 the scopes weren't electric, but mechanic with contra weights which will make it a lot faster. and the movie was just an example.

and besides... it a freaking game, so only if you'd caught me cheating on a real sub, u can tell me I'm a bi ach XD

If I'm not mistaken it was done with a hydralic pump. I also believe the entire assembly is around 2000 pounds. As far as the movies, do not take what you see as how it really was.

Also, the nice way you display swear words needs to stop. If you believe you have arrived at some half baked forum, think again.

Not at all. You didn't originally refer to the movie, you just said
Quote:

Whenever someone makes a claim of any kind saying that what we are seeing is wrong, I ask for a source. If they weren't faster, you shouldn't be stating it as fact. If they were, and it can be proven, then I want to know because at that point I'm on your side.

Oh, and I may or may not be expert, but I am definitely old.

For what it is worth, here are many sounds recorded of equipment operating in the Pampanito, including a recording of a periscope being raised, then immediately lowered. The recording is not very loud, but it seems to take about 17 seconds going up, 10 seconds coming down.....
The Site:http://hnsa.org/sound/#pampanito
The recording: http://hnsa.org/sound/pampanito/periscope.mp3

Lots of very interesting sound recordings, equipment, engines, etc...lots of sonar sounds, etc, I assume the Sound MODders have long ago found this resource.

And movie makers.

You're right that the periscope in 'We Dive at Dawn' comes faster and goes down much faster than the game periscope, but it's not really applicable, as the film is about a British sub, another Sea Tiger.

I would think that films of a certain era would have been filmed aboard a real sub, with the co-operation of the U.S. Navy and as more and more are de-commisioned, sets have to be made and things guesstimated.

@AVGWarhawk: I'm fairly sure I read somewhere, though didn't make a note of where, that the early installations were suspended from cables either side of the periscope, just above where the handles are and that these were later replaced with a hydraulic raise and lower mechanism for <can't remember reason> safety? I remember thinking at the tiome, that's an awfully large weight to get dropped if the cables snap. If what I read was true, the Torsk being late war would have been fitted initially with hydraulic?
