I am curious about transfering flotillas since I haven't done it in a while. It is January 1941 and I am still in command of U-11, based in Kiel with the 1st Flotilla. However, I would like to take command of a IXC U-boat and transfer to the 2nd Flotilla in Lorient. Do I request a transfer to the 2nd BEFORE leaving for my next patrol and then once I patrol my assigned grid, head for Lorient? OR... Do I leave on my next patrol, head to Lorient and THEN request a transfer? I am asking in advance because, with my IIA, just going from Lorient to Kiel will be a strain on my fuel. Thanks in advance, Kaleuns!! Good hunting!

You can only request a patrol whilst in port.....and must have either served 6 months in your present flotilla, or have completed 3 patrols

Bringing this up again as I think the original question was not answered. For those of us who want to make the trip to our new base and not teleport there, do we request the transfer before leaving our current base, or do we carry out our patrol and go to our new base (instead of returning home) and then apply for transfer? (In my example, I am currently with the 2nd flotilla in Lorient and intend to transfer to 23/29 flotilla in Salamis in Oct 1941). Thanks in advance.

![]() Seriously- just finish your current mission "as directed" in your orders and ask for the transfer upon your return. You wull be assigned to the new flotilla and recieve your orders to sail from there on your next patrol. It would be considered worse than a little "presumptuous" on your part to simply go to where you darn well want to before getting orders to do so. You don't just decide on your own to finish your patrol at a base other than your own. What would the married members of your crew think?? LOL

Ok, sorry but I am still not understanding this. Let's say I am at sea on Patrol #10 and I'm based at Kiel. I am thinking that I would like to upgrade to a IXC after this patrol and transfer to the 2nd flotilla in Lorient, so... I am assuming that I would return to Kiel upon completion of my 10th patrol.... once I am back in Kiel, I assign medals to my crew, etc, etc... then I request a transfer to the 2nd flotilla in Lorient and my request is accepted. NOW... do I have to put to sea on my 11th patrol FROM KIEL, go patrol whatever grid they assign me, and THEN head to Lorient? OR will I automatically be transfered with my boat to Lorient? (teleported as someone said earlier, or in RL like I took the train across France).? OR do I begin my 11th patrol, complete it, head to Lorient and THEN request transfer to the 2nd? Sorry this is so complicated. Perhaps someone who understands this and can simply explain it could let us know what order we need to do thing... thanks!

When your transfer is approved, you will transfer with your boat and crew.
In some of the add ons available you have to actually make the trip yourself. In SH3 stock version, the game (with no realism at all) magically takes care of it for you. What I like to do is to use some of my renown to upgrade to a new boat and do the same for some of my opfficers and men. This for me simulates a kind of promotion or perk in being given a transfer and a new command. That portion of the crew that I replace I imagine as being those members who were not allowed (or declined) to make the move with their heroic commander... me. ![]() A big part is imagination and what you make of it. It you prefer to make the trip yourself then try one of the add ons available to force a more realistic transfer.

Thanks everyone. My request was approved and I was automatically transferred to Salamis in Oct41. I thought I had read somewhere that you could actually make the trip yourself if you are using GWX, that's why I asked in the first place (yep, I wanted to go through Gibraltar).

If you do your time, 6 months, or patrols, 3, in your current Flotilla you can then do the trip through Gibraltar ( good luck, captain ). Head for Salamis but do not dock there. Exit the game before you get there and dock at your home base. Then, when at base, request the transfer to the 23/29´th Flot. You will then start your next patrol from Salamis.
And you will have done the trip there yourself ![]() :hmm: hope this makes sense:hmm:
