Default Any plans at all for a surface action mod?

So has anyone round these parts' planned on or attempted to carry out a mod that would allow players in SH3 to command destroyers and other surface vessels? I've come to realize after years of sub games dominating the naval sim market that i'd like to see something for a surface game.

If none have been planned, would it be at all possible to make one with the SH3 game engine? Supposing you were a proffesional development studio? I want my Task Force 1942 sequel already.

WELCOME ABOARD!

We all want a Destroyer Command 2. I don't think the hardcoding will allow it, though the Schnellboot mod is coming along nicely and very popular, so I could be wrong.

We're hoping the devs have something like that planned for the future, but the future it's going to have to be; especially since it would require the creation of ship bridges and interiors, and the hiring of British voice actors if it's to be done right.

I'm aware of the S-Boat and give a lot of credit to the creator. (Especially for the changed, hence original, user interface.) But it's just not what me, or many other people it seems, are looking for. I'm looking for even more than a "Destroyer Command 2", i'm looking for a game where you can stand on the bridge of Colorado or Iowa and call out firing orders. Or even stand on the bridge of Akagi and sortie aircraft for an attack on the believed position of enemy carriers.

The reason i'd pick the Silent Hunter 3 engine over the SH4 engine (bugs and poor building notwithstanding) is largely because it's understood better, has had more development time, and it far more computer friendly. Better technology exists today that it could improve its weaknesses such as draw distance and some physics concerns.

It's proven technology, so their would be no reason to go back and build some totally new engine that would just end up consuming lots of time and money. I keep hoping someone will see the SH3 engine the way developers saw the Quake Engine and now see the Unreal 3 Engine. I guess we just need to hope someone from Microprose is watching this board.

The trouble with this idea of converting SH3 into an all-around WWII naval combat sim is you can't really leverage the SH3 engine for such a mod without a proper SDK, something Ubisoft feels is best kept out of the modding community's hands.

Oh sure, you could do it the hard way with a hex editor but you'd have to be either outright gifted as a programmer or a masochist or, very likely, both.

Ureal and Quake have the benefit of very good mod support from the devs by way of the many good tools released specifically so people could mod the games. Heck, you can even get the game source codes for Quake, Quake 2, and Quake 3 straight from Id Games' website.

I play SH3 because I like commanding a U-boat. If I want WWII combat where I can sail, fly, drive, and shoot darn near anything I'll just load up my cherished copy of BF1942.

Welcome aboard CaptHawkeye

I believe it is starting to become widely recognised thet the SH3 game engine is getting on a bit in gameing terms.

It's limitations are fast becoming apparent, therefore any hopes of getting what your after would probably only be achievable using something with a newer SDK.

Well, at least the boys at Tesseraction are planning to release Enigma's source code. With an engine like Enigma's would it possible to do things ranging from graphical boosts to coding of BBs and stuff?
