Some of you probably have already seen this, but I thought I would pass it on anyway. It would be good for developers, but I think it is just plain cool to listen to. Make sure you check out to the submarine section.
http://hnsa.org/sound/ I didn't think sonabouys were even used in WWII. I thought they were a product of the cold war. No wonder the U-boats were dropping like flies.

Wow that is pretty freakin cool.
Being a sound guy Im gonna enjoy those. Dont know about the sonobouys from what I gathered they were experimental and not in common use. Frankly I dont know how they did it given the technology at the time. They woulda had to have a big antenna, battery, and non descrete components. Maybe they were the size of a volkswagon. |

I don't know, they couldn't have been too big. They were patroling in a TBF Avenger. According to one of the recordings between the pilot and sound guy he drops several of them at a time.
Pretty cool though. Apparently recorded on a wire recorder. Kind of like reel to reel, but on real thin wire.

A lot of technology we associate with the Cold War was born, or in development in WW2. According to this article, the US Coast Guard was enthusiatically experimenting with using helicopters as a potential submarine hunter.

I was entertained by the depth charge recordings. While the sonobouy recordings were much longer than expected, they explained that the equipment was overloaded by the extreme noise level. The "in-sub" recording sounded very much like what we hear in the game.
