Default Totally crazy first career patrol (stock)

I have had SH IV for some time, but my crappy old rig had graphics card that refused to run it. So I finally updated, installed and started SH IV.

Tried few sub school missions...booooring...old SH III player, so I jumped to Career after that.

Realism was usual, that is, everything but manual targeting. Not having much patience for that. Gar-class sub.

First mission, patrol near Honshu...OK...will do. Sailed there...didn't find anything except 2 fishing boats. I was tempted to try gunnery with them as targets..but decided to leave them alone. I love sushi, so fishermen are out of target list.

Next I got radio message about enemy task force, heading straight towards my sub. I did not even have to change course..they came straight to me, it was night. Was wondering if I'd see cruiser of maybe battleship. Was quite surprised to see 2 fleet carriers, escort carrier, and seaplane tender/carrier Chitose etc.

Christmas come true ! Sunk CV Hiryu. Kind of funny to have CV for first sinking ever in SH IV! Got a hit on something else, but in chaos ensued, had no idea what...

Well..patrol got even more weird, I encountered cruiser TF on my way home...and similarly, CA Mogami just decided to sail right past me. Even when carefully remembering to select Contact detonator only, 2 torpedo hits were not enough to sink her.

I was quite surprised with my first patrol.

Will install RFB etc. soon, but trying to familiarize myself with controls playng stock first.

You'd do well to get one of the mod's with the improved campaign layers. I remember my first days of playing stock when the game was released and sinking large passenger liner troop transports like they were going out of style. It's really no fun when they just throw all of the juicy targets at you unescorted. The proverbial "fish in a barrel" you know?

It's been a while since I played, but from what I remember from tater's improved campaign layers and the Run Silent Run Deep mod, they make it much harder and therefore much more rewarding to put the biggies down.

Yea, you are right.

I downloaded RFB and Run Silent Run Deep, since they can be used together. Hopefully experience will be bit better.

Those are two great mods. I doubt you'll be disappointed. Sink 'em all!

Two patrols after installing RFB and RSRD..and I like it very much. I used to own Silent Hunter Commander's Edition...did like it somewhat, but there was no way to tone down unrealistic amount of targets or ridiculously short patrols with no refit time. Now it is lot realistic.

Still feels like for example SH III NYGM "lite" (Japanese ASW was not the greatest)...:p...but I like it with these mods.
