Ok I give up, I've watched the video five times, I'm doing everything to the letter, and my fish are just not hitting at all. They keep falling short even though the speed is correct. what the heck am I doing wrong?

Hi.

First, try doing it with "Map contact updates" ticked as ON.

By doing this you always get a reference to what you are measuring.

1) First spotting and WO role;

I.e call WO for first estimates and make a bearing estimation using the protractor followed by using the ruler to mark the estimated distance.

If that point coincide with the one drawn by the sim on the map you have passed obstacle one.

2) Continue as the tutorial says moving at a safe distance and make another check.

If still in order Dive! You really should have a reasonable estimate of the course now.

3) Move in closer preferable perpendicular to the course. Stop (~1 kts) and take some measurements like AOB if close enough. Compare your results with the ones you get from the map. (Measure with ruler from sub to target, dist/angles)

4) If close enough check speed. I use the obs scope swithching to attack scope to start clock. I then observe via OBS until finished and stop clock after pressing F3 (Attack stn)

5) I always use the circular slide ruler to determine speed due to accuracy.

Paralell to this you can check speed using the map update timing the target for 1 min 15 sec and measure distance w ruler. => Should get same result.

If same then OK.

If all above done correctly My guess is how you switch on and off the TDC-settings. If you do NOT unlock the periscope before opening the TDC to enter for example distance, you may well screw up the settings.

Just my guess but use map contacts "ON" to begin with to get accustomed to the tools.

My two cents worth.

Good luck

/OB

Use weapon officer help

Hello
You are using manual tarketting mode right?
before you shoot torpedos ask WO to give you solution, this way you can see
what you did wrong.

Well I don't know what I'm doing differently, but its working now lol... much more rewarding to hear those fish hit home after calculating it all yourself! Its very hard giving up the external views, no more nice screenshots for me I suppose, will stop me cheating with escorts though lol.

Most of the time when i miss aft i notice that i've forgotten to man the torpedo room and i've forgotten to open the torpedo door prior to firing.

It takes twice as long to get to torpedo into the water from the time you press "Fire" when the compartment is unmanned. Having your torpedo door opened (Q key on the keyboard) will also get it in the water faster.
