Crew and torp questions

I started a new career (again) and went out to sea w/ a default crew. Should I go w/ them or recruit one? If so, how do I do that?

Other question is do you discriminate between targets? Meaning, do you target the largest to get the most renown pts or approach it as "if floats, it can sink?"

TIA!

Not sure what you're getting at with the first question

As for target selection, it all comes down to the tactical situation. Of course I'm always interested in the 'big ones' but I wouldn't take extra risk to get into the middle of a convoy just to get a large maru.

Remember. Two mediums on the edge of a convoy are the same tonnage as the large one in the middle.

On the other hand, when it comes to task forces who can resist them battleships and carriers!

I don't think anyone would tell you what you _should_ do, but I always start with my default crew. Depending on the circumstance, I rotate out 20-30% after each patrol. An exception would be the Asiatic career I just started, I don't think normal crew rotation is going on as you run from Manila to Surabaya to Fremantle. Once I'm set at Fremantle, I'll start the rotation.

At the end of each patrol, I:

1) Hand out the medals
2) Roll a 10-sided die for each man, 1-3 and they're out. Only one man per column can go out, though (don't want to lose all the chiefs of a compartment at once, for example)
3) Award promotions, fill in empty spaces by moving guys up. Perhaps I lost a CPO in the 1st shift of the engine room. I'll move up the other top guys from shifts 2 and 3 straight up, and the second guy in the 3rd shift moves over to become the top guy.
4) Fill in the lowest positions with new, raw recruits (making sure I'm not re-recruiting guys who've been on my boat before, unless it's been a while). The rawest guys cost nothing in renown, I do this to keep from getting a "super ship" full of officers and CPOs.
5) Look for hardware upgrades
