embarassing first post death.

new boy here, lurking for some time, but thought id pop up and say hi.

Anyway i just died a hideous death from an aerial assault, which crippled my poor sugar boat. This was followed up by a few destroyers being sighted heading straight for me. Anyway to cut a long story short, i tried submerging with the intention of waiting the assault out, only to be crushed just as i was about to hit the blow ballast button.

Oh well, still this is impressive behaviour, and i hope this is normal and look forward to coming unstuck in such interesting ways more often.

Welcome aboard, Pirate_cat!

Yes, those planes can be EVIL, especially on a Sugar-boat which lacks anti-air weaponry. As soon as your radar guy cries out "Contact!", and you see a blip moving Very Fast on your map, your next command should be "RUN AWAAAY! RUN AWAAAY!"...uuh...I mean "DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!"

Indeed they are mean and nasty. Although I have a peculiar campaign starting ritual which involves getting rid of all the starting crew, and then hiring a full set to replace them. This leaves me with no renown for a radar. (my IIA didnt need it so why should I. Maybe not the best logic, but who cares.)
Obviously this cuts down the time I have to dive and with a near blind watch crew the odd plane sometimes slips through the net.

I have now however learnt my lesson, as previously planes either didnt engage or buzzed me for a while before running away from the harsh language directed at them.

Ah, the good old "Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!" technique! Clever!

I feel your pain, PC. My first encounter with a Japanese dive-bomber I snubbed my nose at him and he put a bomb right through my deck. Dead in the water, half my crew passed - I am now the wiser about those hunters.

Ha! You bunch of girlymen! Whenever the enemy is sighted I pull stick into stomach, hit left rudder, do a Split-S, dive down and get on his 6 O' Clock and let him have it! That is if I could get this damn hunk of rusty metal off the surface.:rotfl:

indeed I feel my corpse should be dragged up, and given a stern telling off, that'll show me!
Unfortunately although I had a full Damage control team up and running, those same individuals consisted of, 1 petty officer (3rd class) from the torpedo room and the watch crew, (3x petty officer (3rd class) and several seamen (3rd class)) none of whom were particularly mechanically minded.
I suppose in hindsight I should have moved someone who knew how to open a toolbox in there, but I wanted the engines running as efficiently as possible.

At least you were spared the indignity of being asked if you want to resign your comission after you return from your 1st patrol with a boat so battered it had to be retired.
