Default I had a vision of TRUE SHIV greatness today.

Hey folks,

I was playing around with the camera mod that comes with ROW and check out these screenies!

.

.

.
By using the > and < keys in external free cam mode you can walk the decks of any ship due to the restrictions being removed by the ROW camera settings. You can park yourself in a gun tub on a Jap destoryer and ride along as they depth charge your poor sub to the deep! It is really cool to ride along on a merchant as well. I like to set my view from the bridge and watch as the torpedoes strike home!

Now I know what you are thinking. Can you say DESTROYER COMMAND anyone!

Thats right. Now that we can ride along on the ships all we have to do is figure out how to control them. I know, I know, a true Destroyer Command would be the Holy Grail of modding but my little experiment does prove one thing...

The SHIV 3D engine can handle surface ops!

So, do you think a Destoryer Command Mod is possible?
.

I guess they should have made SH4 an open boat where we run around inside and shoot each other a 1000 times. They seem to handle those games with numerous patches. --Longam UBI SHIV Forums

A sad day has dawned...

I know nothing about modding, and think that a DC mod would be ridiculously complex to do if it was even possible.

But I do have dreams.

I don't know nothing about modding as well, but I'm rather pessimistic about having a DC mod in the near future. However I would really, really like to be proved wrong!

EDIT: I've seen that one of the devs has voted "no" as well, so I guess I won't be proven wrong.

Although I would like to see it. Espically in adversarial multiplayer. I think its beyond the capabiliities of 'modders'.

Most likely would require some addittion to and revision of game engine code.

Could be done as another game like the old DC was.

I would also love to see a DC2, but it would require modelling all of the bridge interiors, as well as a couple of other stations ("man the guns!"); plus having all the required voice files done in the correct languages; not to mention having actual models made for the officers and crew.

I'd like to see it, but I agree it will probably take UBI to make it.

I would love to see DC 2 as well, i enjoyed playing DC with SH2 with two pcs networked grab a buddy some beers load up each game choose the fog mission (my favourite mission rough seas heavy fog) and we spend hrs hunting each other. The tension was pretty scary stuff.

Default Oh well...

Sorry, but I'm afraid that would probably have to be a separate application. And if you think about it, we would WANT it to be a separate application with network or online play. But it is a tried and true idea that could expand the sales base of the Silent Hunter series. I thought Ubi was a business. Get to work guys!

This is just an idea

One stand alone DC2(as the the ordinary DC) and to that you can patch it, so you can play online against SHIII or patch it and play against SHIV. Not doing both.

That's my idea

Well as you can see, you can set camera positions on the ships by altering the cameras.dat file. Next would be making the guns on the ships player activated, etc.

I guess my point is that when our subs are on the surface they are surface ships. Why can they not morph a Gato 3D model into a destroyer 3D model and then make it not able to submerge?

There are gun mounts on our subs, so why can there not be mannable gun mounts on a destroyer?

Get my point. The 3D engine that runs SHIV can easily handle a player mannable surface ship. So why dont we have one?

I could see this in SHV more than a mod: Atlantic/Pacific, Brit/German/US, Subs/Destroyers. A global multi-national, multi-platform game something like DW set in WWII. Pics look awesome btw.

Perhaps so. But he shows a grasp or reality as well. Truth is the soul of wit.

I'm guessing none of you have tried the multiplayer? Although terribly buggy and lacking, it basically is a Multiplayer-only version of detroyer command. If they fix it and make it where you could play it stand-alone career, I would buy it. I wonder if that is the add-on being spoken of?

If by some chance UBI got the DC2 $ smell under their noses it would hit the shelves in no time. Other than that don't hold your breath.

Default Would love DC2

I have seen some marvelous modding done to Microproses Falcon 4.0. Probably one of the finest and longest modding pursuits ever and it required years of work and alot of legal and illegal source code work to get it where it is today 10 years later. So I believe alot of DC2 could be modded into SHIV graphically, the hardest part would be things like adding player controlled active and passive sonar and stations and possibly radar even though some of those parts are in there. There is also the worry of cease and dissist orders if you get too fancy with it.
