My Luckiest Shot Ever!
I was recently returning to port on an early mission in my second campaign, and I ran into a Mutsuki Destroyer being led by a Subchaser. I dive to periscope depth, set up on the destroyer, and fire a single torpedo at it. The torpedo hits, but does not do the damage I was hoping for. Naturally, the destroyer starts zig-zagging, but I'm close enough that I think I can get a second shot off if my timing is just right.
I let loose with my last torpedo (set on contact influence in case that I just miss the target), but wouldn't you know it, the destroyer turns around and goes in the opposite direction! Needless to say, I was disappointed, so I dove deep and started back home. Moments later I get a "Torpedo Impact" report! Wondering what's going on, I immediately go to the external camera and take a look. The Subchaser (which I had forgotten about) had turned around to stay close to the Destroyer, and it inadvertently stumbled onto my torpedo! :rotfl: With the Subchaser out of commission, and the Destroyer badly damaged, I surfaced and finished off the Destroyer with my deck gun. They must have fired 30 or 40 shots of their own at me, but not a single one hit! I eventually sunk the Destroyer with my deck gun (it took a lot of rounds to do it though) and returned to base a very happy captain. I even got a medal at the end of this patrol, which was the icing on the cake. Talk about a lucky shot! ![]() |

I have never been able to torp a subchaser. The dang thing always goes right under it. I've even tried with auto-targeting and no duds but couldn't get it.

Back in the stock 1.3 game, I once hit a subchaser in the stern quarter. The explosion threw it clear out of the water, spinning along it's long axis like a rifle bullet in flight. It then splashed back down, upside down and sank like that.
That may the strangest thing I've personally experienced in SHIV.

I had something similar happen to me during an attack on a convoy.
The Merchie I was targeting took a zig zag as my fish approached. Was not called a miss at the time and I was somewhat baffled, but I had DDs coming to play so I started my evasions. About 3 or 4 minutes into the evasion run I get the report "Impact!" "She's going down sir!" I whip outside and apparently all the other merchies were zigging and zagging and one of the further ones zigged into the path of my otherwise wasted fish. I also had an incident where a DD pulled into the path of a fish that was headed for a BB. And took the damage and sunk. Neat Stuff.
