This happened to me before. I was on station an extremely long time and sunk many ships but objective was not completed. I persevered and hoped for the best.
I can't remember if I ran out of torps and went home or completed the objective :hmm: My only advice is to persevere until you have no torps; if objective is still not done, just go home.

Not the best advice, but...

You have to sink then inside a certain radius of the area your asigned to patrol in for it to count (50 to 100 km?)

What mission were you given? Was it a "Deploy to..." or "Patrol..."?

If it's deploy, all you need to do is to proceed to the objective. When you're within about 50nm of the icon the mission will automatically be completed and you will be given a new one which directs you to sink ships. You are free to sail anywhere to engage enemy shipping, but must sink a total of 10,000t (stock) or 4,000t (Trigger Maru) to accomplish the second mission.

If it's patrol, you will need to keep within a radius of 50 or 100 nm of the icon (I'm not sure which, I use 50 nm) for 48 hours to accomplish this. Whether or not you sink any ships during this period is, I think, unimportant.

Yesterday I was told to proceed to "X" and patrol within a 200 nm radius for 96 hours. I ended up using all my torps as I fell upon a major shipping lane but the icon wouldn't darken. So I just parked my sub and time compressed until it finally did. I don't recall how many hours passed but I will report it's a bummer to be in a target rich environment with only beer cans to toss.

If your orders are to "patrol" (ie. not just "deploy to") then you need to be sure to stay within range of the objective star (stock game I think is 50nm). I draw a circle of radius 50nm and make sure to not leave that during the patrol period (ie. until I get the objective done indication). If you stray too far away from the objective mark, the clock gets reset - in other words, it's not a cumulative time spent in the patrol area, it has to be one continues period.

When on a patrol in a defined area I send COMSUBPAC a message at the completion of the time specified and the within the patrol zone. I then get an updated message.

Truth of the matter is you dont particuarlly have to sink anything when on one of those 'patrol' missions.

The deal is if you have torpedoes left after the time period has elapsed you will be sent further orders.

Then again you can sink every sampan fishing boat and merchant you see till your out of torpedoes and you STILL have to remain on station till the time has elapsed. Once that has happened you can radio in and will not recieve any more orders.
