Huge Vista Tip! Black screen main menu=Free Vista Codec Pack Problem!

Hello all you Vista users who get a black screen where the main menu should appear. I just figured out that if you have the Vista Free Codec Pack installed, in my case v450, SH4 will not run!

Uninstall the codec pack and everything is fine.

Now, I'm going to install the XP Codec Pack which is what I had before this problem and see if everything still works. I'll keep this thread posted.

Ok, next step. I downloaded and installed the XP Codec Pack 2.3.2 from free-codecs.com. SH4 runs perfectly, however, this pack has caused me some other problems. I ran into a DRM Problem with an AVI file that has worked since I've had it.

I'll have to work that out later, because right now, all I want to do is finally get back to playing SH4.

BTW, it's working with the 1.4 Update.

That's interesting, I'm going to check that out and see what the score is on one of my PCs with Vista on it.

Yes, I'm an idiot!

My problem had nothing to do with Codecs. I'm using an NVidia 8600GT and installed the software from NVidia. Under the 3D functions, I chose the "Quality" setting thinking this would make my card work hard and look great.

That was wrong!

Check the box that allows the 3D application to decide. Otherwise, SH4 will not run.

Thanks a million ddales! I had not played since installing vista and was in for a nasty shock when it would not work... making the changes in the nVidia software fixed it perfectly after hours of trying other stuff.
