Default Real TDC layout?

So what's the deal with these two files in the \Data\Textures\TNormal\tex folder? These depict pretty much the entire left and right side of the Mk3 TDC, as far as I can tell.

Common_TDC_Gauges_01.dds
Common_TDC_Gauges_02.dds

And more importantly, is there anything we can do with them... other than dream of what might have been?

I'm guessing it's what you see when you're in the con or the conning tower - depending on the sub's layout. It's a shame that they didn't model the TDC in game to show the dials moving to what you were actually calculating - other than the few dials you see in periscope/attack map view.

The ingame interface for TDC is simplified for the game but it is fairly accurate also. What you see as far as the textures depicting the TDC is very good. Also, the dials do turn after you set up eveything. Go ahead and use TC, watch it all work. Standing in front of the USS Torsk TDC and comparing to what I see in the game with the space to do it in, they did a great job. Personally, I think they did a excellent job with the TDC.

So true! I have readed the description and simplified manual of the real TDC, and boy was it a nightmare to use! No wonder some officers or petty officers were trained specially to man it....with enough knowledge the amount of info you can get from it is sweet, but for us wanna-be experts and gamers, what the Dev Team did is just the perfect thing, trust me

The Torsk's TDC is very large. You actually use a handle that is located on each part you set, AOB, speed. You spin it with your hand or dial it in as it were. Only difference is the ingame version it is done automatically when up click update. Thats it. In the torpedo rooms are the second part to the TDC and the dials are the same as found in the con only these turn to what the con TDC is doing. Other than that, I hear it click as the dials are turning slowly and the attack develops. Quite pleased with it all really. Very cool destructive toy when you play with it correctly.

And here I thought the TDC in the CR or CT was just for looks and didnt render anything at all.

Come on Duci watch them! They spin slowly and if set up correctly, will stay exactly as you see it outside you periscope/TBT as the attack develops. Set it up once and hit TC, watch them move!

Is Torsk's TDC still functioning?

If not pm me for a visit to Cod this summer, and we may be able to show you how this 'puppy' really works. It's impressive to see and hear the machine crunch the numbers.

Also for those who don't know: check www.hnsa.org for the TDC manuals.

Here a photograph of the real thing:

And...this one still works...
groetjes,

It is working as far as I know. I will have to ask Gil who is restoring the con about it. I toy with it every now and then, turn the dials, but getting up in that conning tower is a bear for me. I bang my head no less than 6 times. My daughter who comes up with me has to step on my head to get down. The ladder is a bit far for her small legs. Then we busy ourselves in sonar listing to the screws in the water. Then we toy with the radios to see who we can pick up. Other than that, I busy in the engine rooms fixing, repair or restoring. Are we are in the aft torpedo room polishing the tubes and getting the ever present oil that always finds itself coming from some pipe and drips on the 'cutie'

But yes, watching the mechanical computers do it's thing is awesome. I just might take you up on that Cod visit. The favor is returned to you as well. I'm at the Torsk every Saturday morning working away! I really enjoy it.

I was posting when you put the pic in. Yep, that is the same as the Torsk. Quite a piece of work. I'm going down tomorrow and will take the time for a closer look. I have spent the last few Saturdays repainting the Fairbanks back to the gray they are supposed to be. Some idiot painted the forward blue . I guess the paint was on sale.

I'm definite will be talking with Gil tomorrow and see if the Torsk is operational. I believe it is. No tourists are allowed in the con. Just to difficult to get to, not to mention the fact that they touch everything and if it ain't bolted down it ends up in their pockets to be sold on ebay

Sadly they are exactly that, just for the looks. The only functional wheels are at the command interface.

Yeah, much improved over previous efforts from a functional standpoint. But I still like the full screen 2D rendering such as they did for SH1. I was very disappointed that they did not update that concept for SH4, but went in this different directions with the 3D interface and the stylized multi-function input devices.

The difference, for me, is all about immersion or suspension of disbelief as it were. I know what it's supposed to look and feel like, and when it doesn't it detracts from the overall experience.

I would have liked to have seen the same effort put into the TDC interface as seen in SH1, as well.

I've been working on the Batfish in Muskogee, OK and sadly their TDC is long gone. We have a wooden model in its place. The dials in each torpedo room are still there, though.

After looking at some of the removals and mods that the Navy did to her before they handed her over to civilians, I'm thinking that they never wanted anyone to use it as a weapon ever again. They even disconnected the 1MC system, but it's just a matter of splicing the wires, since all that they did is cut them.

Btw, where do you guys find the old style fuses that are the right amperage for the Torsk? They have been robbing fuses from different parts of the boat for years.
