After browsing a lot of the posts in here, particularly the posts with released mods I'd like to make a suggestion to the managers/moderators of subsim.
It seems that a lot of people (including yours truly) are scanning through post after post to try and find the latest version/patch to a mod. Can I suggest that "finished/updated" mods be placed in their own 'forum' with a d/l link and with the addendum "updated as of (date)" and a directive that NOONE post messages at that particular spot except to update the mod version. Is it possible to have a thread which displays a link but is "locked out" to additional postings by regular members? This would avoid the plethora (aka: hockey-sock-full) of posts which only end up obscuring the original intent and leaves members searching/wondering (that'd be me too) where the most up to date version of a mod is. This would also avoid the constant posting query's of "where can I find the latest version of X mod?" etc which, again, only clutter up the website and no doubt irritate the modders. This would also free up the actual Mods Workshop main forum for WIPs etc and general queries. A modder could simply post "TM version x.x.x has been updated" and everyone would know they could go to the finished mod forum and d/l. I'm not sure if I explained my logic correctly and haven't been a subsim member that long, so perhaps this has already been tried. If so, excuse my naivete. ![]() |

....that link does take you to the mods, however i always feel like i have to read all the posts in case i miss anything about the particular mod. The collection ends up feeling clunky and disjointed.
A locked place with a single update post could make things a lot easier on modders, methinks as well, Tom. |

I agree as well ...
One could spend a lot of time readin' through posts lookin' for the most up to date mods ... A centralized location would seem to work best I think too ![]()

![]() ![]() Phew, glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. dog and kinderei; you got my point exactly. The links, as Sailor Steve indicated, are obviously handy but they're still chock full of posts which essentially clutter up and confuse the situation. As is evident by the numerous posts of people asking what is the latest mod, which is compatible with which, it should be streamlined so to speak. As an example; The TM mod sits in its own forum. The ONLY post in there is from the modder himself. It says "TM version xx.x.x, latest version as of....date....compatible with mods X, Y and Z etc." and it has the d/l link. There are NO other posts in this forum/thread. NOONE is permitted to post there except the mod creator. You go there only to d/l the latest version of the mod (you go in, d/l, and get out). There's no other place for the mod d/l ergo no other/older versions floating around etc. Any kudos/suggestions/comments etc are posted in the main Mod Workshop forum. This suggestion isn't meant in a negative, complaint way, I just see it as a way to improve the tracking of mods and avoiding confused numpties like me etc. cheers, Last edited by tomoose; 01-05-08 at 04:04 PM. |

In most mod threads, if not all, the most up-to-date version is right in the first post on the first page. When releasing new versions the authors post in the thread to say that a new version is up, and then edit the first post of the thread to reflect this. This works well enough for me, since it doesn't take long to see if a new version is up.

This is not a complaint, only an observation:
Actually, my confusion is never what the latest version of any particular mod is, that is pretty straight forward ~ like the Fin says its usually at the top of the page. The fun (for me) begins when im trying to figure out if my TM v. 2.3.75/879 is compatible with my RFB v. 7.30979%%&.00034-D. The only way for me to know that, is either to go wading and weeding through the half mile or so of very confusing sub posts that often times are misleading, and misdirecting *OR* asking the author of the mod the same question that he was asked 5,062 times in the last hour. That is what is frustrating to me (and probably to Tom, as well) in regards to that main mod link. my solution: 1.Mod 2.Readme 3.Autors comment(s) nothing else. simple. ~dog ...though i must say, that the sub modders have more patience than i ever expect. Its a rather complicated soup they're making and i can appreciate that. So many mods have to gel with so many others. its like a game within a game, isnt it? ; -) have you ever spent hours getting your downloaded mods to finally work together, only to end up too tired to actually play? if you answered yes, then you are a true sub simmer. |
