The size of the side emblems is limited by the size of the 3d object
they appear on.
Only way to make it larger is to increase the size of said 3D object.

To my knowledge, u-boat emblems can be no larger than 256x256 and the maximum color depth is 24bpp (16.7 million colors).

However, you can make your emblem as colorful as you want, even using photographs or other artwork you like such as anime, comics, etc. so long as you convert it to a 256x256 24bpp .tga file.

So boot up Photoshop, GIMP, or whatever and make some emblems. If you want to do something simple like making an emblem green or converting a picture into the proper format, IrfanView is a good choice. It has some basic editing tools and effects plus it can use .8bf plugins for more functionality. IrfanView can do many other things too numerous to mention here.

If all you want is just a green laughing swordfish to make you happy, then here...

*CLICK ME*--->http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LV100641<---*CLICK ME*

Filename is Laughing Swordfish.TGA, only this is a new version.

Simply put this in your SH3 sub emblems folder, usually located at:
"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Emblems\SubEmbl ems"

I used the emblem from U-96, added a vivid green color and a black outline to make it stand out, then tweaked the details. It's all yours to do with as you wish.

Hope this helps.

You can make your emblems as big as you want, as long as they are square.
All the emblems I've made are 450x450 and some of them are even bigger.

You're very welcome, von stauber. I'm glad I could help.

Now sail that fish with pride and let every ship at sea beware the Technicolor™ swordfish!

CapZap, if the emblems can be of any size then why is every emblem in the SH3 data folder only 256x256? Are you saying that you can make an emblem large enough to plaster all over the side of the u-boat's conning tower or does the game shrink it to fit regardless?

I'd appreciate some further enlightenment on the matter as having a larger "canvas" to work with would open up many possibilities for u-boat tower art.

You know, I'm beginning to get the hang of making these emblems and starting to enjoy it. There may be more to come in the future.

You can make the TGA any square size you want.
BUT!
The display area is only so large.
The actuall 3D object would need to be enlarged.
To see the display boundries make a grid and see
what I mean.

privateer, I gather from what you're saying is that the size limit for a u-boat emblem is the surface area of the conning tower's side. I thought that might have been what you were trying to get across in your earlier reply in this thread, but your explanation at that time was a bit too terse for the five brain cells I have left after playing SH3 for 8 hours.

I suppose I'll have to do some experimenting to find what the max size is in pixel units. It must be fairly large, given that a 256x256 emblem looks almost postage stamp sized when emblazoned on the conning tower of a Type VIIB U-boat.

I wonder if there is enough room to airbrush that classic "stagecoach riding toward the sunset" mural that seemed so popular on vans and trucks in the 1970s? Well, at least it was in the western United States. :P

No, the size limit is determined by a square 3D object placed on the
side of the Turms.

This object can be enlarged, moved, shaped, all that,
in a 3D program.

UNLESS there are said changes made?
You are limited in placement and size.

Anyone who can export, modify, and reimport this object,
can change the appearence of the emblem display area.
