Unsinkable Yamato's?
I've had this problem a couple of times before, and want to know if anyone has perfected a "weak spot" for HIJMS Yamato" I recently found 2 in one task force, had a perfect approach and then proceded to pump 6 torps into one and 3 into another, without having an appreciable effect other than stopping them dead in the water. That would have been a good sign, except it appeared they were both shipping crateloads of pingpong balls, cuz they never sank.

We had a thread on the toughness of the Yamato a few days ago..
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=126460 Frankly, I'm glad to hear she's hard to sink. Makes the sim sound more realistic. Historically it took the combined air compliment of a carrier task force to take these bad boys down.

Wow. Up to 10 torpedo's to take her out? I mean, one would think that if it was dead in the water, they wouldnt have enough power to pump out the bilges, i guess i could try spreading the torps out instead of trying for the instant kill every shot...maybe flooding over the entire ship would work better than just pummeling one or two spots.

Hit here at about the 30ft mark at least on your first attack, hit her with all tubes at once to minimise the chance of her being battoned down and damage control teams being at the ready for later fish, try to get a good spread along her length, she seems to be a little more fragile in the stern and forward of her front batteries. As you see her start to list remember to adjust your torpedo depths accordingly.

I found a Yamato, mine took 10 fish to sink too, the first 6 just stopped her dead in the water, the stern tubes wrote her off.

You have to remember that they were truly massive ships, with enormous armour levels, vast numbers of compartments and, accordingly, very difficult to sink. They both absorbed something along the lines of 17-20 torps and a similar number of 500 or 1,000lb bombs before sinking, and even then it took something like 2 hours.
The fact that you can stick a single torp into a BB and watch it go off like a firecracker is decidedly unrealistic IMO. Bear in mind that a warship is designed to take damage. They have far more compartments than any vessel of comparable tonnage, and a much larger crew with far more damage control equipment (sprinklers, fire hoses, fixed and movable pumps). Archerfish sank Shinano (the 3rd Yamato class, redesigned as an aircraft carrier) with 6 torps, but she had not finished fitting out and her crew was poorly trained. I would expect you to be able to cripple a Yamato with a salvo if you got 6 hits. 10 hits might sink her. The reality is you would damage her so badly she'd be out of the war for a long time, plus absorb a lot of materials and time in repairs, so that's a victory from a strategic perspective anyway. |

Trie to get be hind it and hit the props it will blow them off or it should fire about 2 torps and the rest of the fleet should leave it behind so you can do ya dirty work

The Yamoto class was, in all regards, a super BS. They were huge with incredible amounts of armour. The US had nothing that could match the Yamoto class, which is why the Montana class was designed (although only the keel of the first of the class was ever laid down, and subsequently cancelled), essentially being a heavier armoured Iowa class with 12 main guns, not 9. Even still, lighter armour than the Yamoto, but a heavier broadside.
My point being, you should not be able to sink a Yamoto class with 3 or 4 fish, its gonna take the majority of your torp complement to sink one of these behmoths, and I mean common, no skipper would have sunk a Yamoto class then carried on and sunk a few more BS's or a couple of crusiers for good measure like you can in SH. They would have thrown everything they had at the Yamoto and legged it. They were a class of super BS's, they were (and still are) the largest BS ever built in the world, I doubt they had a weak spot that a sub could exploit (the only weak spot I have heard of is its pathetic AA defense). |

We had nothing in the same size range, but Iowa or even South Dakota would have given her a run for the money, IMO.

Unbelievably, I've YET to so much as SEE a Yamoto. I don't know how many patrols I've sailed in career-mode and never once!
![]() In the meanwhile, any tips on finding her would be much appreciated. (Running TM and RSRD btw) Once I've got her in my sights, THEN perhaps I can worry about how to send her to the bottom ![]() Enviously, Howler ![]() |

I sunk a Yamamoto before and I wan't even using mods, I ran into a battlegroup near Jawa in 1942 there were several crusiers and many destroyers and smack dab in the middle was the yamamoto. I had a full salvo and quickly lined up 6 shots along her bow and she sank 2 hours after. The way I did it was instead of direct hit I switched the torpedos to contact influence and then I set the depth to 7ft below her waterline. Causing the torpedo to explode under her belly so it ignored most of the armor and compartments of that ship. Because in WWII many ships had special armor or attachments to stop torpedo's (nets, HO machine guns, fins) infact if you look in the mueseum every major warship in the japanese navy had fins to prematurly detonate torpedo's. Sinking the Yamamoto can be done you just need the right time, the right angle and hopefully alittle bit of luck.

I've been trying to get some more info on the Yamaoto's vulnerabilities as well - as opposed to researching how invincible she was. But it seems there is no general strategy as the few posts I've found on the subject differ from one another.
I sneaked into a Japanese port and found 2 yamaoto's anchored there. I've been trying to sink at least one of them with my 8 remaining stern torpedoes targeting various parts of the ship using different settings (Contact Influence etc) but no luck so far. More reports from others would be valuable, the more data we can collect the better. |
