You target the landing deck and in the right moment kick the damn Mercedes out of the loading hatch - what'S the problem?

Real cool concept. I'd love to have seen the Admirals face when somebody told him that they'd like to try doing it.

I think the take-off is more impressive, and I'd be interested to know the fuel load on board for the ones they show in that film, because the aircraft has full flying speed well before the end of the carrier's deck. I guess it must have been minimal, with the intention to refuel it once airborne.
Anyone who's been to a few airshows will probably have seen a C-130 do the 'reverse up the runway' demo with the props in beta mode, so it's not really a surprise that it can brake in time to stop on the deck for a landing with the props reversed, but it must have been wierd for the guys flying it to have to do that, as they would normally do the complete opposite and firewall the throttle upon touchdown in case they get a bolter. Really good footage that though, cheers for posting it Kapitan, especially the bit with the F-84 Thunderstreak refueling - not seen much footage of those kicking about. ![]()

I'm pretty sure that wasn't an F-84 but a North American FJ Fury.
A pic of that event: ![]() ![]()

The first shot definitely was a Fury, but the second from the interior of the C-130 looked like an F-84 to me, could be wrong though. Yup, I'm wrong, just watched it again, it's a Fury on the interior shot too, my mistake.

I'm pretty sure that the Navy never used F-84s.

No, they didn't use F-84s, I just thought it might have been a NASA one for the tests, but upon watching it again, it is indeed a Fury.

I don't mind anyone pointing out my error, after all, I like the Fury too, and it gave me an excuse to watch the footage again, which is, as I say, very cool and interesting. I love the way the narrator keeps stressing that the operations at the pole are 'scientific' too.

According to the vid the landings were tested up to 33,000 lbs payload.
Good to know it can be done if it needs to be done. Probably the only AC that the USAF also flys that could recover on a carrier if need be, though I wonder how many USAF pilots could do it, though I guess in an emergency they might. |
