Default Movies

WWII - there are a number of them (black and white) be easier to type in WWII Submarine movies in amazon - they are all cheap generally under 12 dollars US. One of my favroites is "Operation Petticoat" with Cary Grant. Cold War - try Ice Station Zebra - pretty good overall. Also try the BEDFORD Incident with Richard Whidmark - really good starts slow but builds nicely. Other than that the standard fare of Red October and the ultimate BS of CRIMSON Turd (Tide) lol. (Comex rant)K-19 is actually better than CRIMSON TURD - well actually VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA is better than CRIMSON TURD. If I ever had a Sonar Sup say "Conn - Sonar, Sonar - Conn, AKULA HUNTER KILLER B-345" I would choke him to death on his mike cord. Idiot. I would also microwave the dog for the hell of it and freeze all the JO's pillows. Man that movie is just plain one of the idiotic boomer fag flicks out there (finex rant)

Run Silent Run Deep isn't bad

I wish someone would make a modern version about US subs in the pacific during WWII...there are just so many good stories that need telling! I'd like to see them make one about the USS Wahoo...Not gonna' hold my breath though.

Happy viewing,

Howler

The Enemy Below

Pleasantly surprised with this one--though it's about a US Destroyer, attacking U-boats. Lots of cat and mouse--a real classic.

I think a remake of Run Silent Run Deep would be good except this time it should stick more closely to the book. IIRC the film was only very loosely based on Beach's book....pretty much the title and thats it!

But seriously....they could do a very good job with the effects available now, make it into an American Das Boot, plenty of gritty action and no punches pulled. Maybe somebody like Ridley Scott to direct?

Now, call me a prude if you want, but I don't think it's good policy for the Navy to hand over a billion-dollar piece of equipment to a man who has "Welcome Aboard" tattooed on his penis.

Funny, that's what the admiral said.

My all time favorite is still 'Run Silent, Run Deep'. I always thought it was one of Clark Gable's best flicks.

A couple of more that I haven't seen for quite awhile are 'Up Periscope' and 'Torpedo Run'.

For the cold war, there's 'Hell and High Water'. Betcha never heard of that one. I still remembered several scenes from it when I saw it on its original release, so I just had to buy it when it bacame available a few months ago. Pretty hokey nowadays, but still watchable (well, barely).

Sound effects and voices are used in this sim from both 'Below' and 'U-571', and several others.

Good hunting!

I recommend.....Operation Pacific.....

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
If not a seminal World War II submarine picture, then Operation Pacific is at least an entertaining one. John Wayne stars as "Duke" Gifford, first officer of the submarine Thunderfish. Patricia Neal is Duke's ex-wife, and when they meet again after four years, the couple tries to recapture "that old zing." Complications arise when Duke goes on a mission with dud torpedoes, and his best friend's younger brother goes after Neal. Fans will be pleased with Wayne's role, as the Gifford character is one of Wayne's simplest, but most honest performances. Wayne regulars Ward Bond and Jack Pennick are on hand as well; Bond plays sub captain "Pop" Perry, and Pennick the sub's Chief. The scene in which Pop tells his crew to "Take 'er down!" came from real life; a sub skipper uttered the famous command during a desperate surface action. --Mark Savary
