Default This is pretty cool!

I'll have to play with it a bit. On the surface it looks like it can only run within a browser.

For myself, I wonder if I'll use it at all. I built a similar all-in-one wheel, Cap'n Scurvy's Angle on the Bow and Speed Calculator, http://mysite.verizon.net/ress1z18/. Hope the link still works. Anyway I built it and never use it! But I'll still play with this one to see what I can do.

Default Hehehehehe!!!!

What is your desktop resolution? I can set you and everyone else up here. First the ingredients:
http://img456.imageshack.us/my.php?i....swf&width=640
http://img456.imageshack.us/my.php?i....swf&width=800
http://img456.imageshack.us/my.php?i...swf&width=1024

There you go. These ingredients should be chosen to match how much space you want taken up by the operable whiz wheel. On my 1152 x 864 desktop I chose the 800 version, which is 800 x 600.

Step 1: right click the link of your choice, depending on desktop space and copy link location.

Step 2: clear all the dozens of junky windows you have open and right-click the desktop. Choose properties from the context menu.

Step 3: now choose (drumroll, please) desktop. Underneath the Background: combo box you'll see a Customize Desktop... button. Push it with dread and trepidation.

Step 4: Select the Web tab. Stab the New... button.

Step 5: Left-click in the Location box and press ctrl-v to paste your link. Press OK.

Step 6: Wait............ you know the routine. After it says it's synchronized you'll be back to the desktop items screen. Make sure Lock desktop items is not checked as you will have to resize the window holding the whiz wheel. Press OK. Press Ok on the Display properties window to leave you looking at a small square on your desktop which may or may not appear to hold your whiz wheel.

Step 7: resize the window holding the whiz wheel so you can see the entire thing. I went back into desktop properties and locked my desktop so I wouldn't mess my icons in front of the whiz wheel up when using the whiz wheel.

Step 8: either thank me or curse me when you find the whiz wheel is more trouble than it is worth!

This surgery was performed using Windows XP Media Edition. Vista can do the same thing with slightly different procedures. This procedure actually puts the whiz wheel on your hard drive and does not require a live link to the website. Therefore the whiz wheel works even if you're not on the Internet at the time. Is that what the doctor ordered?

OK I'm rusty here so somebody knock me out of here if I get on the wrong track! Preparation:

Ignoring the periscope handle on the outside for a bit, there are three rings of numbers. The inside one is your target's AoB, which will be the result of our gyrations. But it also has a silhouette of our target and labels for Starboard and Port. AoB is always between 0º and 180º, necessitation the S & P designations.

The middle ring of numbers is compass course for both self and target.

The outside ring is for bearing to target.

The periscope indicator lets you precisely read the result and isn't always a part of these whiz wheels.

Let's go! First, from your plot, aim the arrow at the bow of your target to the compass course on the middle wheel.

Then ....nope, not gonna work my way because in RL I rotate the two inner wheels together and set own course. Never mind....
First set your own course. See on the outside on top it's pointy and has a semicircle on the bottom? The is the bow and stern of your own boat. Grab the middle ring of compass course numbers and put your course opposite the 180 at the top, where your bow is shown. This is the tricky part because you'd think your own course would be opposite the zero. WRONG!!! Each ring is moved by dragging its yellow handle area.

Second, grab the inner wheel representing the target and point its bow arrow at zero toward its course.

Lastly grab the periscope handle and set it to the target's bearing as shown by your periscope. Reading the number indicated on the inner ring of numbers (target) will give you the Aob. Inspection will tell you whether it is starboard or port.

Done!!! I never use it. Had to review the diretions on how to do it. I hang my head in shame.
