CTD after upgrading PC

I hope somebody can help me here. I've been running SH3 sucessfully on my 3Ghz 1Gb RAM machine with Nvidia 6600LE, a bit slow at times, but still playable.

Now I have updated my machine to a Dual Core 2GHz processor with 4Gb Ram and since then I have the sinking feeling.

It does'nt matter, whether I load a saved carrer, or a single mission, it's always the same. It loads about 75% and just before the game starts I get a CTD. Could it be that the games does recognize the CPU as a 2GHz single core and thus it does not meet the required criteria?

Any offerings or suggestions what I should attempt to do? It is also irrelevant whether I start from Subsim Commander or launch the game from the short cut to SH3.

Hi and welcome aboard

May well be the case

Go to

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\Support\DetectionToo l\SH3DetectionTool EN

And run the detection tool

AFAIK SH3 only uses 1 core

When I run it it comes up with 3192Mhz - mine is a 6.4Ghz Dual Core so I guess it does only use 1 core

Yep the SH3 engine is only single threaded, it only uses one core.

But that CPU is fine for playing SH3, a 2ghz Core cpu is actually faster han a 3ghz p4 (I assume that was what you had?)

I have a 2ghz core 2 duo (T7200) and SH3 runs great.

Could be a problem with your new ram? Try downloading a ram tester, you can do a quick and dirty test with the windows one here: http://hcidesign.com/memtest/
If it finds any errors then you definitely have a problem... but to 100% rule out ram problems you should download one that you burn to a CD and boot from.

Thanks guys for your help. Much appreciated.

After deleting everything and reinstalling all the add-ons one at a time and running the game, I finally got it up and going.

One thing was a carreer with 26 patrols (which SH3 does not like and constantly crashes on me), everything worked well.

I have noticed that there was no noticible speed performance with my current hardware. It seems the display card is the main factor around which everything revolves - slow card - slow performance. Oh, well have to rip out the plastic and upgrade on that score too .

But thanks for the help and I am glad the game is running again.
